Review of Ignoring the Evidence
Ignoring the Evidence by Rod E. Cumberland is his autobiography detailing his life as a young boy in rural New Brunswick through his school years to his career as a wildlife biologist fighting for ethical wildlife conservation against corporate and political corruption. Throughout his story, Rod demonstrates his intrinsic principles from his early years until they come to oppose corporate and political interests. You will wonder why the book's subtitle mentions glyphosate, deer, and the abuse of power; there is just one way to find out. This memoir encompasses the author's personal and professional life but focuses mostly on his professional life.
I enjoyed reading this book. It is arranged into three parts, and I think that is very helpful given the critical nature of the author's professional life. I also like how the author elaborated well on his earlier days, as that helped me understand his personality and made reading much more relatable. Aside from the values in his life, which are exemplary, the book also creates awareness regarding corporate and political power plays and how ethical considerations can be boxed out by those who determine policy. It also shines a light on the fact that most citizens have very little information as to what goes on in the background, which is a very wide-reaching issue.
Saying more might tempt me to share spoilers. The style of writing was quite straightforward, and the diction wasn't difficult. I just have one thing in mind that I would appreciate if the book had: I wish the book had more details on the author's family. That is just some more information to get to know his life as a father. I noticed only a few errors in this book, which shows that it is professionally edited. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars for the reasons I mentioned above. I recommend it to readers who enjoy reading memoirs.
