Review of How to Lead, Inspire and Develop Human Dignity
Are you interested in honing your leadership skills? Would you like a step-by-step guide to lead your company to success? Do you wish to learn about the importance of human behaviors in a company's success? Then, How to Lead, Inspire and Develop Human Dignity by Zoran Vidović will be an excellent choice for you.
The book starts by differentiating between management and leadership, explaining how leadership involves the factor of focus on humans. It then outlines various steps, like defining a mission and vision, setting a legal framework, creating the standard, establishing the compliance process, outlining the hiring process, evaluating the employees effectively, and so on. The author correctly states that media and political influences decide the way a company is perceived by the public. He stresses the importance of assessing the various skills and training the employees would need. The hiring process is explained clearly, and tips for the effective evaluation of employees are also provided. I agree with the author's views about listening to the employees' feedback. The three basic types of leaders—"Follow me," "Wasn't me," and "I'm not here"—were interesting to read. The conclusion gives a concise summary of the responsibilities of the company, the leader, and the employees. The questionnaire at the end encourages the readers to analyze their leadership skills and self-perceptions. The author covers a wide range of topics, such as providing performance feedback to the employees, managing underperforming employees, and resolving friction within the group.
I really loved the author's easy-to-read writing style. He explains every topic very clearly. He provides simple examples like Meta, Kodak, VW, etc., which are effective, making me wish there were more such examples. For instance, using the electric vehicle as an example, he explains how we should embrace and adopt changes only after considering their feasibility, benefits, and negative impacts. He also shows how a company can go bankrupt by not utilizing advancements in technology and not embracing growth at the right time, through the example of Kodak. Each chapter is structured very well, with the chapters flowing step-by-step. I appreciate that there are no repetitions in the content, and the book is straight to the point. I also like that the author not only highlights various issues but also provides solutions for them. I chuckled at his comparison of expanding the company to the game of Chinese whispers. The following line from the book intrigued me.
"Leaders need to understand that true authority and leadership cannot just come from a position but, more importantly, from a style, poise, intelligence, empathy, selflessness, and courage that colleagues and subordinates respect, understanding that we hold ourselves accountable to the same standards that we demand from them."
I noted only a couple of errors while reading. So, I believe it is professionally edited. I thoroughly appreciate the author's effort and have no dislikes regarding the book. So, I am happy to rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Success depends on the employees, and a good leader should create an environment that keeps them happy and allows them to grow towards success. This step-by-step guide is helpful for someone starting a company, as it details all the steps involved in leadership. The author's explanation of how a flawed structure leads to incompetence and catastrophe will surely help the growing leaders. This book also guides them to reflect on their approach and improve themselves to lead the company to success. I highly recommend this book to entrepreneurs and leaders. This book also helps aspiring leaders to elevate their performance in their professional lives.
