How would you feel when you are going about your life normally, and suddenly, someone just comes up to you and tells you that you seem very unhappy in life? A similar thing happened with Gerard Wouters, the author of this book titled “How to make life simple, happy and successful the Taoist way.”

Wouters was attending a work-related seminar, where a small Asian man was constantly staring at him. When Wouters, irritated by the staring, approached him to ask the reason for the staring, the man replied that Wouters’ eyes reflected sadness, his posture showed that his back was hurting, he seemed tired of life, and he was not the man he was supposed to be. The Asian man also said that he felt that the author, at that time, had no idea of his true purpose.

Surprisingly, all of it was true! Impressed, the author invited the man to his house. After having a chat, it was revealed that the man indeed was a Taoist monk. After getting convinced that Wouters needed his help, the monk took up his case, and this is how the author’s journey towards Taoism began.

Today, Gerard Wouters is the only Taoist Niranam therapist in the world. The Niranam method is one that mixes physical, spiritual, and mental healing. Throughout the book, the author, with the help of examples and his own personal reflections, has subtly guided us through this method.

As the author mentions, this is a book that provides an instruction manual to make life simpler by giving you insights into the different life processes and giving you tools to do things the other way round, making life simpler, more successful, and much happier.

It helps us answer life questions that we all would have asked at some point in our lives, like, "What are we doing here?" "Where are we going to?" and "Why are we in this world?" The book further helps in becoming who you actually are by giving us insights into the behavior that we may exhibit in our life processes and what the consequences of this can be.

I really enjoyed the hints, clues, and facts section of this book. Also, the way the author has explained the concept of ‘the hole’ and ‘the total hole' was beautiful. Basically, the hole is nothing but your higher self, or your soul, or your subconsciousness. It depends on what you believe in and what you like to call it. This ‘hole’ keeps giving you signs, hints, and clues, and you have to be aware enough to pick them up.

I loved the way the author explained a lot of things through examples. For instance, the example of the lady who could never end things with her ex-boyfriend because she had an emotional detachment problem actually reminded me of someone I know. Through this attitude of hers, she constantly found herself in a vicious loop and created problems for herself. That is indeed true. Also, the example of the Portuguese guy, whose taxi to reach the airport never arrived, and then he had to go through a series of delays and ultimately miss his flight, only to know later that the flight had crashed, was a very powerful example of following the hints that the ‘hole’ is trying to give you.

The other examples in the book, like the one with the woman who always wanted to please everyone or the one about a couple in which one was submissive and the other was dominant, were also some that I liked. The author has also beautifully explained how most sicknesses have a mental cause. He has, through the Niranam method, helped many such people objectively and without pre-judgment.

I also loved how the author mentions that this method is more about unlearning than it is about learning. Another thing he said that I liked was that danger is a reality, but fear is a choice. One more thing he said, if I may add, was that unlearning what doesn't serve you makes you grow. This is something I liked, and I totally agree with it. The author has also shared his experiences with the people he has helped heal in his practice, such as the case of the lady with multiple sclerosis.

I can say a lot more things about this book, but I want you to read it or listen to it, as I did. It is one of those books that looks and reads simple but carries a deep meaning if reflected upon and applied in life. Since I heard the audiobook for this one, I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it in the author's own voice. It was a wonderful experience, and I have absolutely nothing to dislike about this book. Therefore, I award it 5 out of 5 stars. I cannot really comment on the editing as I heard the audiobook, but there were no flaws at all in the narration.

This book does talk about ‘the hole,’ which, as I mentioned before, is like another way to address your higher self. So, readers who are not believers of such concepts may not connect with this book as much as readers who believe in these concepts. I would recommend this book to anyone who is open to the process of unlearning and thus growing in life. It will prove to be quite helpful.
