"BAD KARMA: The True Story of a Mexico Trip from Hell" by Paul Adam Wilson.
In the late 1970s, Paul joined two friends on a surf trip to mainland Mexico. They set out in his VW bus, nicknamed the Wonderbus, which turned into the adventure of a lifetime. Their trip was marked by repeated mechanical failures that slowed their progress towards their dream surf destination. At one stage, they boarded a ferry that had a close encounter with a tornado. Once they reached their surf paradise, Paul found himself face-to-face with a shark. During the trip, the bus got stuck in a river and needed repairs. Paul suffered from food poisoning, yet had to endure a long bus journey to collect the spare parts he needed. What began as a fun surf trip soon unravelled into something far more chaotic.
The editing is very good, and I could find no mistakes. I absolutely love Paul’s writing. There is a real skill to the way he tells this story. The humour and dialogue in this book really draw the reader into the situations he describes. One moment I particularly enjoyed was when Paul snagged the mosquito net while sleeping and woke up covered in bites. The way Paul describes this makes you feel itchy and sore.
Paul writes: “With the exception of three intersecting wrinkles in the netting on one shoulder (that’d kept their “weapons of mosquito suction” at bay), a bright red mosaic of bites covered me. I can only compare the feeling to being scalded with hot water—with no interruption forthcoming—and unbearably itchy. My skin was on fire, and there was nothing available to extinguish it.”
This book suits readers who enjoy true personal stories told with humour. It had me laughing out loud more than once. There is nothing I can think of that might have been done better. "BAD KARMA: The True Story of a Mexico Trip from Hell" is one of the most hilarious stories I have ever read, and for that reason, I rate this book five out of five.
