Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks, written by Morton E. Tavel, MD, is a collection of useful facts and tips. The importance of the book is emphasized through the knowledge the author, a retired physician specialist and professor of Indiana University School of Medicine, offers to his readers. While seeking for optimal advice on an improved life quality, people are frequently confused by the overwhelming amount of information from multiple resources on the Internet as well as in books. Tavel has relieved his readers from worries and anxiety by providing them the direct answers to their questions in his Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks.

The book is divided into 3 categories: Tips, Myths, and Tricks – exactly how he named the book. Each chapter is introduced with a question showing concern not only about food but also about the misconception, outdated practice, and scam currently circulated among people. For example, he discusses about the ineffectiveness of stretching before exercise or sheds light on the alkaline water scam. The articles always include detailed introductions and explicit information about the related subjects, which guides people who are not familiar with the term. When digesting each chapter, I feel like I have acquired a critical piece of information. After each conclusion, the author never forgets to leave his advice, for example, on what type of food one should use or how much food in quantity one should consume.

When I read Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks, I was continuously astonished at Tavel’s revelations on everyday subjects, for example fish, salt and red meat, that secretly leads people to major health problems, such as heart disease, obesity, and so forth. Even when he is a knowledgeable physician in his field, he never lets his own feeling influence his research. Everything he presents comes with a solid piece of evidence. If the matter is unclear, he will state that it is unclear with no further uncertain prediction.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4. The writing style is entirely academic with the incorporation of credible sources, which earns my trust. Nonetheless, too much academic tone might exhaust some readers who are not used to digesting scholastic articles. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is on that verge. I appreciate how the author comments with his own opinions in each article to not let the readers feel lonely or bored, but the reading experience will be more enjoyable and appealing if the author can make the tone, at some point, more humorous.

In my final opinion, Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks is a perfect match for anyone who favors a healthy and hearty lifestyle or for someone who is simply curious about the impact of what he or she consumes daily.
