The Hands of a Warrior by M.A. Dozier is a nonfiction spiritual guide tailored for fathers. It’s designed to be followed for 30 days. Dozier emphasizes the importance of men being spiritual leaders of the family in their roles as husbands and fathers. He reminds fathers that the influence they have over their children can be used to push them toward or away from God. He provides tips on how to raise kids to grow in God, such as practicing words of affirmation, taking the time to know them, and using the power of prayer. He says that a father’s role is not just to save his family but to build them in the image of Christ.

I appreciated that Dozier discussed the importance of surrendering to God as a means to help fathers, especially in leading their families. He also talked about some of his fears. Dozier obviously has strong family values, which are shown in his writing. He warns against prioritizing work and finances and advises on the importance of guiding children spiritually. I also liked that he referenced some exemplary men from the Bible whose values could be emulated, such as David.

However, one of my major issues with the book was the doomsday feeling it evoked while reading. Many chapters constantly remind readers of how the Devil wants to break up the family unit, the need to prepare for spiritual battle, and the weapons needed to do so. I understand that the author may have used these words to emphasize his points, but I still didn’t enjoy the feeling it evoked.

Regardless, The Hands of a Warrior by M.A. Dozier makes a good religious read and will be best enjoyed by Christian men. Considering my likes and dislikes of the book, I’ll rate it 4 out of 5 stars.
