Review of about town
In 1963, Bonnie Vaughn’s husband was dying of cancer. She had to find a job to support herself and her children. She found a job driving a taxi cab in Memphis. Back then, it was unusual for a woman to be driving a cab, and many people would stare as she drove her cab around town, but Bonnie did what she had to do to make a living. This book introduces you to the life of a lady cabbie and the stories of many of her passengers.
Some of the stories were interesting, such as the different people who entered her cab and the peculiar requests that the passengers had. A few of the stories were not interesting at all, and I wondered why they were even in the book. I was not enthusiastic about this book. There were numerous spelling and grammatical errors and sentences that did not make sense. The book was not professionally edited and needs several passes through an editing staff. The author’s writing was mostly grammatically incorrect and difficult to follow.
What I disliked most about the book, About Town, was that the author described every passenger as if they were in a lineup at the police station. She would describe them as a tall male, 6’4”, with dark hair, dark eyes, handsome, 200 lbs., athletic build, etc. What did that matter? She just had to say a tall male got into her cab, period. It became extremely annoying after a while. I hate to say this, but the book would have been better if there had been a ghostwriter developing the story and possibly making the stories more interesting.
I don’t dislike that many books, but I disliked this one. I am giving it a rating of only 1 out of 5 stars. Too many errors were distracting, and the author’s writing did not flow across the pages. I would not recommend this book to anyone until it has been properly edited.
