Review of Football 1
Football 1 by Geoffrey Brown is a rich collection of insights, experiences and observations exploring personal and societal realities. I will be sharing my thoughts in the following paragraphs.
I think Brown is honest, considering the things he admitted to in this book. Take, for instance, what he disclosed in topics like "Choice" and "Being Good Versus Being Bad." This gave depth to these issues and provided a conducive environment for reflection and constructive discourse. I also feel that the author is liberal enough with his writing; he presents issues and the way he understands them without trying to force his opinions on others.
The author has raised several points in this book to think on. I found his takes on subjects like "Constitutions," "The Freedom of Speech," "Driving," "World Peace" and "People and Life Are Disappointments" really insightful and interesting. The question, "Why is our society in such a way that in order to grow up, you must become a worse person?" got me into deep thought.
Some of Brown's positions can be controversial, though, like his take on open relationships and nudity. Although readers may have different interpretations of his comments on these topics, depending on a couple of factors like family upbringing, personal values and belief system, the underlying call to reexamine the logic behind certain conventions and practices remains clear.
I found the author's notes on food cans, water pipes, tires and filth very insightful and a powerful voice for the much-needed reforms in these areas. Basically, this book leads you to examine your life and reflect on the realities around you, and that was a great job. Brown has a way of infusing humor into the book. Take, for instance, when he wrote about being higher than a giraffe's ass after doing drug.
However, I would have appreciated it if the author included professional reports to prove that Jesus was responsible for his personal injuries and misfortunes. Those claims are heavy, and I feel concrete, objective evidence is necessary. Also, I felt the author's word choices regarding this matter were extreme. Calling Jesus a terrorist and an evil, selfish person was off-putting for me. I feel there are better, healthier ways the author could have presented his grievances. Again, this will definitely offend Christians and anyone who holds Jesus in reverence. Furthermore, I found the profanities disturbing and even unnecessary at times. I also do not think the title covers the content and scope of this book; I suggest the author consider a more comprehensive title in a subsequent edition. For these reasons, I am removing a star and giving Football 1 4 out of 5 stars.
If you are looking for a thought-provoking read or a book that explores personal and societal issues, Football 1 may be a good option to consider.
