Are you curious about how to properly start a small business? More specifically, are you dreaming of starting a home-building or home-remodeling business? Do you want to avoid joining a never-ending list of small businesses that fail in their first five years? if you answered yes to any of these questions, you will benefit from reading Plan to Profit by Chuck Miller.

My interest in reading this book stemmed from my history as a do-it-yourself home renovator and my dream of starting a business. I have always heard that many small businesses fail within five years. Chuck Miller wrote this book to help small-business owners avoid this pitfall. According to Miller, this problem can be solved with proper planning. You might be thinking, “Where do I start?” Ponder no more. As you read this book, Miller will walk you through the process of formulating a good plan for your business.

Miller provides readers with a step-by-step process for making solid business plans, strategies to maximize business success, and review mandates to keep a business on track. They are explained in detail with clarity. All of the information is delivered in an organized fashion. Readers are encouraged to think about and formulate what unique need their businesses can fill for their customers. Emphasis is put on filling a need that one’s competitors are not. It is suggested that pleasing customers with a common need is better than trying to please many customers with various needs.

Miller discusses many components that are part of a good business plan. They include market research, service plans, operations plans, staffing plans, leadership plans, goals, action plans, financial forecasts, budgets, mission statements, core values, and review plans. The resulting business plan will attract customers whose needs will be filled, assure customers that they are buying a quality product, and convince lenders to have confidence in the direction of your business.

I found this book to be thorough. No stone was left unturned. It was easy to read. I believe that if I take the time to follow the guidance found in each chapter, I will be able to make a solid business plan and have a shot at making my business last beyond five years. I would have given this enlightening guide a perfect mark were it not for several minor spelling mistakes. Another round of editing will perfect this book. Aside from the editing, I did not find anything to dislike about this book. I gave it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars.

Proper planning seems to be the key to making a business last, and the detailed approach in this book sounds helpful. Too bad the editing wasn’t sharper.

Very detailed review, but alas, home-building and home-remodeling are not my priorities at the moment. The book still looks comprehensive though!

Most people dream of owning a business. The fact that most small businesses fail in the first five years is intimidating. The author wrote this book to assist those who wish to start a successful business. About the author, I am wondering if this is the same Chuck Miller who writes the fictional stories.

I agree that many businesses fail because of a lack of planning. Specifically that of market saturation. I don’t pretend to be an expert in this area, but too many choices can lead to decision paralysis on the part of the consumer. Thanks!

Sounds like a practical and well-structured guide for anyone serious about starting a home-building or remodeling business. The focus on solid planning and filling a specific market need makes a lot of sense, and it seems like it could save entrepreneurs from a lot of common pitfalls.

Another great review! Starting a small business, or any business, nowadays is certainly a challenge. People just do not have the money to spend.
