Review of The Complete Long Covid Handbook
The final months of 2019 marked the beginning of tough times for many due to the COVID-19 outbreak. It brought a lot of uncertainty and affected the health and well-being of countless individuals. Even after what seemed like recovery from COVID-19, many people, including those with mild or asymptomatic COVID-19, are experiencing health issues known as Long Hauler’s or Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (PASC), commonly referred to as Long COVID. This condition often presents itself with distressing symptoms like extreme tiredness, brain fog, changes in taste and smell, nerve pain, stomach pain, chest pain, and unusual sensations in the body.
In response to the challenges of Long COVID, Dr. Robert Groysman, MD, presents a well-structured guide titled The Complete Long COVID Handbook. This book provides vital information about Long COVID and lends support to those navigating these lingering effects. This second edition of the first volume includes updated information. The author provides details of the remaining four volumes reserved to discuss the treatment specific to the four major causes.
Researchers have evaluated that there are over 200 different symptoms associated with PASC, which can persist for months or even years and affect multiple organs and thus delay recovery. Dr. Groysman compares the treatment of PASC patients to those involved in a multi-car crash; while all the individuals are impacted by the same event, they may have sustained different injuries that require unique approaches, tests, and an individualized treatment strategy.
Dr. Groysman emphasizes the importance of understanding the underlying causes of the symptoms to create a tailored treatment plan for each individual. He specifically scrutinizes four causes: dysautonomia (concerning the autonomic nervous system), mitochondrial dysfunction (problems with energy production in cells), gut dysbiosis (issues arising out of imbalances in gut bacteria), and mast cell dysfunction (problems with immune response). Dr. Groysman explores other potential causes and explains why these four are particularly significant, rightly recognizing the need for a comprehensive approach. A thorough evaluation of the symptoms alongside the causes and years of experience and expertise helps define a unique profile for each patient. He clarifies that a one-size-fits-all kind of approach is not possible.
Dr. Groysman lends credibility to the information provided in this book. His expertise and dedication to patient care are evident as he has been successfully helping patients long before the term was formally recognized. He rightly emphasizes that information in this book should not be substituted for professional medical advice. He encourages using the book as a helpful resource to discuss and chart a treatment plan under the supervision of a healthcare provider, making it a wholesome approach for all parties involved.
What makes this book especially valuable is its clarity. Dr. Groysman presents complex medical information in a way that is easy to grasp for everyone, regardless of their medical background. He includes simple questionnaires that draw attention to a wide range of concerns and symptoms, including issues that might not immediately be associated with PASC, like accelerated aging, hair loss, impact on the menstrual cycle and libido, etc.
Another aspect of this handbook is how it validates the real struggles that the patients face and serves as a guide for creating an informed treatment plan with a healthcare professional. The book offers methods for identifying the causes, assessing the risk factors, and deciding on treatment strategies for doctors.
I could find only a few errors that can be easily addressed and have no negatives to report. I gladly rate it five out of five stars. I see this handbook as a source of hope and valuable information. It helps understand what is happening in the body and offers insights into effective treatment and care. I recommend this book to those struggling, caregivers, and medical practitioners.

Very true Amy. It is refreshing that this book rightly focuses only on helping diagnose the causes and effectively treating them. The methods may help many chart a treatment plan. I appreciate you for sharing your thoughts.Amy Luman wrote: ↑04 Feb 2025, 09:39 The effects of long Covid, as well as Covid itself, are difficult to tell at this time. Not only has there not been enough time for research, there hasn’t been enough time to develop an effective treatment strategy. This book, though, provides a reason for hope. Thanks!
Happy reading!
