Outsmarting Obesity by Stewart Lonky, MD addresses the growing population of obese children and adults. Pointing to the rise of obesity nearing epidemic levels, Dr. Lonky says, “Obesity is a complex, multifactorial metabolic and behavioral disorder that requires people to make changes.” Dr. Lonky outlines the complex causes and presents a four-step guide for sustained weight loss. The book supplies information about the assorted avenues of weight control and some actionable strategies for fighting the epidemic of obesity.

The book examines the rise in obesity in America. The book also highlights environmental factors and "obesogens" (i.e., toxic compounds) that affect hormonal balance. Dr. Lonky argues against blaming individuals. He addresses how society and the government contribute to perpetuating the disease.

Discussing epigenetics, the text explains that some individuals may be more susceptible to obesity due to gene variants. Dr. Lonky explores how behaviors also impact health. For example, unhealthy food availability and marketing to children play a role in establishing poor eating habits. The book suggests lifestyle changes, mindful eating, and toxin removal.
Dr. Lonky makes abundant use of scientific research. He carefully cites references that support his assertions, lending credibility to his insights and recommendations. There are some valuable resources at the back of the book, including books, online resources, professional organizations, and companies.

I like Dr. Lonky’s uncomplicated writing style. In most instances, he makes his scientific presentations accessible and understandable to a wide audience. Meticulous systematic organization facilitates the accessibility of the content. Dr. Lonky begins with some case studies before advancing to the research and deeper topics. Three numbered sections flow seamlessly with distinctive subheadings to keep readers on track.

I find nothing to dislike about this book. I recommend Outsmarting Obesity to adults who are interested in becoming more informed about the epidemic of obesity. Considering its flawless professional editing, readability, and well-structured content, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.
