Review of Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success
Breaking the Mold: Remodeling your Way to Success is a memoir written by Fabian Videla. It is an engaging account of the author’s journey of his personal and professional successes and failures and the life lessons he learned through his mistakes. He describes his story as a story of rags to riches, of triumphs and failures, of courage and fear, of laughter and tears, making it clear that life offers the opportunity to succeed only if there is a strong desire to succeed. Born in Argentina in a working-class family, he started his first venture at the age of 12 years, selling fresh garlic from a farm and learning the secrets of business from his experience with the help of his family and friends. He worked on a vegetable and grape farm for some extra money and realized the importance of hard work, perseverance, and dedication. He also learned to implement innovative ideas.
The author talks about his construction business and his new company, Smarter Remote Modelling 360 Solutions, a software company to help construction businesses. The main topics of the book include starting a business, professional licenses, finance, pricing, building an online reputation, funding, loans, creating and managing a team, and developing systems and procedures. There are discussions about building relationships with employees, about potential customers, managing money, insurance, and business partnerships. The author describes many of his business ventures during his early life, his education, and learning computer skills. His profound knowledge and computer skills brought him to the USA with better opportunities for success and prosperity. He describes his transition from software to construction and remodeling. He mainly describes his construction business, but the key features and suggestions apply to all types of businesses. I also noted some praiseworthy topics—giving priority to marriage and family, not compromising on price and quality to beat the competition, and the contribution of immigrants to the economy of a country.
Although a memoir, the book is essentially a valuable guide to building a thriving business. The anecdotes from his professional life are both interesting and educational. Often neglected aspects of a business venture, such as taking chances, tax calculation, profitable pricing, overhead expenses, creating a legal entity, and professional licenses, are explained very clearly in detail. I especially liked the explanation of calculating profit with examples and the discussion on competitive pricing. Another salient feature is the discussion about including a spouse in business and maintaining a balanced relationship between personal life and profession. The writing style is excellent, and all the topics have been fully explored without excluding any aspects of a business. The Lessons of Success, as the author calls them, are presented at the end of each chapter and then again summarized in the Epilogue. There is nothing to dislike about the content or the writing. The editing is remarkably good; I noticed only one insignificant error in printing. I found no reason to rate the book less than perfect, and my overall rating of the book is 5 out of 5 stars.
The book offers the reader an insight into the factors that are crucial for success in business without compromising on the quality of goods and services. It provides guidance, suggestions, tips, and information about traps to avoid. I would recommend the book to business owners who aspire to succeed in business and keep their spouses and families happy at the same time.
