Awesome review. I am a huge fan of memoirs, and one of my favorite movies happens to be Goodfellas. If done right, memoirs are captivating and from your review alone, it's enough to draw me in. I'm looking forward to reading this one.

I appreciate how you likened the book to a well known, based on a true story movie. Normally I prefer fiction. However by what you describe about Mr. Costello's childhood and life, I am looking forward to reading the book.

I've only encountered a few memoirs that I actually enjoyed reading. I'm not sure this will be one of them but it sounds promising. I like the rags to riches aspect and how thorough it is. Unfortunately, I have never heard of him before.

I am also not a fan of memoirs but it sounds like John Costello had a very interesting childhood and wrote his story very well. After reading your review, I am very interested in reading this book. I am glad that it seems like his story had a happy ending as he steered away from his father's influence.

This genre is not my style but it certainly sounds well written. I like the idea that he struggles with living in two different worlds. I think many people could relate to growing up one way and choosing another path as an adult.

I don't think I'll be so quick to read this book because I am not a fan of any stories about parental abuse. It is a sensitive subject to me and one that will be too hard for me to attempt to take a glance at even though it's still an issue today.

I have never heard of John Costello, and I'm not usually a big fan of memoirs unless I know who the author is, but your review makes this one sound like it's worth a second look. I don't generally like memoirs/autobiographies, but I so love the title of this one. Having moved to Chicago in 2012, I can vouch that things here now are as terrible as ever; my boyfriend, a native, also regales me with tales of how things were when he was growing up in the early 70s. Even so, I don't know that I'd read this, even though I really do applaud the author for rising above it all and making good on his life, especially having had the father he did; I so know what it's like to have discouraging parents, though mine leaned too far in the other direction and wouldn't entertain my young fantasies... In any event, thanks for the introduction and thorough review.

Sometimes I reach for a memoir and this looks like an epic one. I like the fact that the reviewer felt that she has known him for years after finishing the book, so the author has done a great job at pulling the reader in.
