Review of Pecked to Death by Ducks
Title: Pecked to Death by Ducks
Author: Rochelle Brandon, MD
This small book contains excellent advice for smoothing your life out, eliminating worries that shouldn't matter, and finding the most streamlined and satisfying way to live. It's all about prioritising tasks and sorting out the rest, which might or might not be as important. The minutiae that tend to infiltrate our everyday lives and demand attention must be kept to a minimum to reduce our stress levels and improve our lives. I love how she advises us in a chatty, almost comforting manner, using beautifully persuasive prose. What she says is relevant to today's hyper-busy world, especially if we have a family.
The book introduces scientifically proven methods, such as the Eisenhower Matrix, for effective prioritisation. The author's thoughts and advice are largely drawn from her own heart and experience, making them all the more relatable.
There are sections devoted to the impact of the internet on our psyche, and I enjoyed her sentence regarding the Internet:
'Amplifies the distractions of minutiae, creating the constant background noise of obligations and trivial concerns.'
This is an excellent way of describing it!
In all of this, she exemplifies mindfulness, which helps us control the hundreds of distractions that batter our consciousness on a daily basis.
I loved the comparison to being 'pecked to death by ducks'; it's a good phrase to remember. The quacking of ducks in a hemmed-in pond, with no escape, and swimming around in circles without getting anywhere is how we all feel at times.
The book was refreshingly short, which I found necessary because her advice is more likely to be retained in this way. There are easy-to-follow exercises at the end of each section and a conclusion as to what has been said. I loved the occasional bright illustrations.
I found no grammatical errors and nothing to dislike, and enjoyed her advice. I will award it five stars and recommend it to young adults and older.

Way to be upfront about the internet playing a leading role in a lot of modern-day stress and anxiety. It needs to continue to be highlighted that the better we get at personal management of our time with the internet (including NO time at all, when necessary) the better we’ll be at dealing with our own selves. There are sections devoted to the impact of the internet on our psyche, and I enjoyed her sentence regarding the Internet:
'Amplifies the distractions of minutiae, creating the constant background noise of obligations and trivial concerns.'
I don’t think I’ve ever heard this analogy, or at least not precisely with ducks. I love how fitting it is and will probably keep it in mind, whether I actually read this book or not.I loved the comparison to being 'pecked to death by ducks'; it's a good phrase to remember. The quacking of ducks in a hemmed-in pond, with no escape, and swimming around in circles without getting anywhere is how we all feel at times.
