Review of Crypto For Grannies
Crypto For Grannies: A Senior’s Guide To Understanding Cryptocurrency – Simply, Safely, and Without Falling for Scams by Judy Temkin is a ten-chapter book that helps grandparents understand their grandchildren when they talk about cryptocurrencies.
In this book, Temkin debunks crypto myths, provides fun storytelling, and simplifies terms such as “blockchain” and “mining.” Each chapter builds on the previous one, beginning with a fictional story between grandparents and their grandchildren and Temkin’s lessons on crypto filled with relatable analogies and vivid comparisons. In addition, each chapter shows us how grandparents can bond with their grandchildren and how they can be empowered by speaking “a new language.”
From the start, Temkin shows that learning about cryptocurrency can break generational barriers and help the elderly bond with younger generations. She then introduces us to the concept of “blockchain” and why it is a digital ledger. Temkin also shows us many ways to prevent losing our money, such as enabling proper security measures (like 2FA) and how to spot and avoid scammers.
Moreover, Temkin describes crypto’s volatility and shows how grandparents can become “silver surfers.” In addition, she shows readers the difference between tokens and coins, different types of digital wallets, investment styles, and much more. What each chapter has in common is that they demonstrate that we can all learn about crypto as long as we stay open-minded and continuously learn.
I liked Temkin’s humor, such as a footnote pointing at a redundancy. I also learned new words like “newfangled.” In addition, the analogies of crypto’s security as a secret cookie recipe and how taking care of one’s crypto is like taking care of one’s garden are relevant. I also loved her saying that crypto’s volatility “has its ups and downs faster than a grandchild on a sugar rush.” Lastly, in comparison with most non-fiction guides, Temkin excels at storytelling.
I disliked, however, that the book suggests signing up for their newsletter at the beginning of the book. Such suggestions should be at the end. Readers should first get a good overview of the book's contents. In addition, the suggestion link did not work, making the book lose some credibility. The book also did not share specific starting points (like a particular website, book, or company) to begin one’s cryptocurrency journey.
The book has some missing punctuation marks in bolded sentences and one chapter without its chapter number. However, its grammar and formatting issues did not detract from the reading experience. The book seems well-edited.
After considering my likes and dislikes, I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars. I recommend it to grandparents who want an introduction to crypto. Parents and teenagers can also read it. However, those with a general grasp of crypto do not need this introductory book.
