Ninety-Day Wonder, written by Stephen Davenport, is a memoir that recounts the experiences of the author in the Navy. Ninety-Day Wonder is a term historically used in the U.S. military to describe officers who received commission after a short training period during World War Two, precisely ninety days, hence the nickname. As the name suggests, the author was trained for only ninety days, and this made him feel very under-equipped and under-experienced. He felt like he had nothing to offer the Navy, and they might have been better off without him.

In the Navy, he realized how deeply rooted racism was within the institution; the blacks were constantly being treated unfairly, and he got his fair share of discrimination because he was a Ninety-Day Wonder. He found it difficult to fit in because most of the duties he was assigned on the ship weren’t physical; they required him to use his brain, and his strength lied in his hands. He got married and was to return to his job on the ship after his honeymoon, but he received an order that stated otherwise, and he was elated that it did.

This book stands out as a meticulously crafted memoir, rich in detail and depth. The author demonstrates an unwavering commitment to capturing every nuance of his experiences, sparing no detail in his storytelling. This thoroughness not only adds literary depth but also immerses the reader fully into the narrative, creating an experience so vivid that it feels as though you are living through the author's journey yourself. One of the most compelling aspects of this memoir is how the author skillfully balances his narrative. While much of the book focuses on his life in the military and at sea, he also takes the time to explore his personal life, offering insights into his world beyond the uniform.

There was absolutely nothing to dislike about this book. One of the things that stood out for me was the detailed inclusion of military terminologies and procedures, even though the events that he was recounting happened way back in the past. The author went the extra mile to ensure that these details were not only accurate but also seamlessly integrated into the narrative.

I rate this book five out of five stars because it is an excellently written memoir. I didn’t find any grammatical or spelling errors while reading, which allowed for a seamless reading experience. I’d recommend this book to military enthusiasts and lovers of a well-written memoir.

As a prospective reader, this review paints a compelling picture of "Ninety-Day Wonder" by Stephen Davenport. The depth of detail and personal insight described in the review suggests that the book offers an authentic and immersive experience into the author's Navy service. The meticulous crafting of the memoir, including accurate military terminologies and procedures, seems to provide both historical context and personal narrative in a balanced manner. The mention of the author's struggles with racism and feelings of inadequacy adds a layer of emotional depth, making it more than just a recounting of events. If you're interested in a well-rounded, detailed memoir that combines personal challenges with historical insight, this book appears to be a must-read.
