Prayer Plus Faith Equals Miracles: 31 Days of Fervent Prayer is an inspiring and feel-good book written by Sharon Crittenden.
The book is a collection of thirty one fervent and, I could say, powerful prayers to be prayed for each day of the month. The prayers are ultimately basic with the key elements present in each prayer: adoration, confession, thanksgiving and supplication with adoration constituting the most part of each prayer.
I, for one, enjoyed this book a lot and I appreciate the author’s taking the time to write it. What I like most about the book is the sincerity. With only a simple introduction to explain the purpose of the book which is to let the readers know the power of fervent prayer, the book is devoid of any unnecessary parts, no assertion of specific faith, no passing of judgement against non-believers and no false promises, just a simple invitation to try fervent praying and find out if it makes any difference. The author simply offers a pattern, a guide on how to commune with God and it is up to the readers to decide what to do with it.
Each prayer is beautifully written with lavish praises to the Lord for His greatness and unconditional love, sincere confessions of shortcomings, heartfelt thanksgiving for everyday blessings, and requests for divine healing, help in handling finances and protection from enemies, among others.
For me, all the prayers are inspiring and encouraging and have the effect of giving hope and calming fears that they seem magical. They actually remind me of the Book of Psalm of the Holy Bible. Believers would definitely want to read this book for two reasons. First, for believers who have a hard time establishing a connection with God, it is a wonderful guide on how to communicate with the Lord in a personal and intimate level. Second, for believers who already have an established relationship with the Almighty, it is a beautiful book of prayers that strengthens faith even more.
However, though the title explicitly says ‘prayer plus faith equals miracles,’ indicating that prayer and faith are separate things, I personally believe that praying is an act of faith. Not to start an argument with the author, I believe that people pray because they believe that there is someone out there who listens.
Furthermore, skeptics may find the prayers seemingly identical and repetitive. Some may even think that they could do better and might consider the book a waste of money, while agnostics may find the book of no use at all. That limits the target audience to devout Christians.
I could easily and willingly give this book a perfect score if not for numerous and noticeable errors like grammatical errors, misspelled words, incorrect word usage and mostly typographical errors such as missing words, double-typed words and missing letters.
I, therefore, rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. It is inspiring, encouraging, passionately written and well-intentioned. I recommend it to those who want to establish an intimate relationship with God and to those who want to strengthen their faith.
