Science Deepens Faith: Jessie’s Miracle is a touching story of a woman’s fight against a rare cancer and her husband’s effort to find a possible cure for her disease. It is written by Thomas McAvoy.
Jessie was a kind and spirited woman who made everyone around her feel good. She was generous with her time and she was always willing to do something good for other people. She loved life and she enjoyed life to the fullest. So, when she was diagnosed with pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), a rare type of cancer, her family was greatly shaken. Her husband, Tom, gathered all information he could about PMP and, with the help of specialists and scientists, initiated a research to find a possible cure for her disease.
This is a poignant, informative and inspiring book about love and faith. It is divided into four parts. The first part is about Jessie, her diagnosis and her battle against the dreadful disease. The second part features Tom’s determination to find a possible cure for Jessie’s illness. The obstacles he and the entire research team faced while working on the project. The third part is about the author’s personal research in theology, astronomy and cosmology as he tried to find the reasons for the existence of diseases like pseudomyxoma peritonei. In the last part, the author presents various miracles including those that pertain to the research on Jessie’s disease.
The book is a combination of love story, scientific research, theology lessons and amazing testimonies that miracles really do happen. It depicts the author’s great love for his wife and his desire to honor her. Moreover, it presents the details of the research in chronological order. How the author teamed up with two brilliant physicians and worked with other colleagues to uncover the mystery of pseudomyxoma peritonei hoping to come up with a possible cure and how they encountered numerous hindrances which threatened to put an end to their research. Furthermore, the author expounded on the Big Bang Theory, Theory of Evolution and the story of creation in the Book of Genesis as he tried to explain the existence of dreadful diseases like PMP. In addition, the book features physical miracles particularly the miraculous healing of John Traynor.
I can, therefore, say that this is a well-written book and one great reading material. Though there are noticeable typo errors (like this email is the inquire and after to conference call), they are, thankfully, very few. It is very interesting and very informative, well-researched and well-referenced. However, since the book combines memoir, scientific research and theology, the difficulty lies in recommending it to a specific type of reader. Fans of memoir may find the scientific research too technical while researchers and theologians may find the memoir too personal.
Still, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It is a well-written book. It is touching, informative, enlightening, thought-provoking, inspiring, encouraging and hopeful. I recommend it to those who enjoy memoir and to those who are interested in scientific research, theology, astronomy and cosmology.
