In Niching Up: The Narrower the Market, the Bigger the Prize, Chris Dreyer attributes his success as the CEO and founder of Rankings.io, one of the top agencies that provides SEO expertise to personal injury law firms, to niching up. Dreyer does not intend to convince the reader that niching up is the only way for their business to succeed, as niching up is not for everyone and doesn’t apply to all businesses. He aims to show the reader the benefits and disadvantages of niching up through his journey to success. Then, the reader can decide whether or not niching up is the pathway for them.

Niching Up is a fast read thanks to Dreyer’s straightforward writing style, peppered with personal experiences and nerdy pop-culture examples. The readers will have no trouble learning the disadvantages and advantages of niching up. Some disadvantages are a smaller market, competition, lack of diversity, and product perfection. Meanwhile, the benefits include expertise, premium pricing, higher rate of conversions, relationship equity, and referrals.

Dreyer discusses the cons and pros of niching up and offers invaluable advice throughout the book that is useful in all types of businesses and work environments. Dreyer warns the reader, for example, to be careful of who they choose to associate with because some people act like the dementors in the Harry Potter series. These people act like leeches, trying to get any information and taking more from you without giving anything in return. Successful people build connections that result in relationship equity.

He also discusses the “Dunning-Kruger effect, which is a cognitive bias where people with limited knowledge greatly overestimate their competence.” In this case, people think they can do what you are expert at just by watching you do it. To become a real expert takes a lot of work, focus, knowledge, and experience.

I rate Niching Up by Chris Dreyer 5 out of 5 stars because it is an excellent book about Dreyer’s success with niching up that will help readers decide whether or not niching up is for them and their businesses. The editing was superb, as I did not find grammatical errors. I highly recommend it to business owners and readers interested in improving their work environments.
