Review of The Vitality System
The Vitality System by Kyle Gonzalez is a comprehensive step-by-step guide to a healthier body, mind and spirit. Fueled by the desire to help people with their health and wellness, the author devised a framework with all the necessary tools and strategies to empower people to live healthier lives.
The author is a highly certified and experienced health and wellness professional with a postgraduate degree in Kinesiology, the study of movement. His clientele ranges from athletes to Hollywood stars. He is the creator of The Vitality System, and its focus is to help individuals take control of their lives by optimising their health and nutrition. It comprises three sections; Foundational Principles, Vitality Concepts and the Core Four. Each chapter starts with an introduction to the topic and facts backed up by research. The topics are broken down in depth and explained in detail. There is a Vitality Pledge at the end of the book, which means readers can commit to applying any of the actions in the Core Four for a month, and exercise routines to assess movement quality are also added at the end of the book.
I picked this book because I was intrigued by the title and its promise of guiding one to live a healthy, active and happy life. Most of us now work from home, and with that comes a sedentary lifestyle; we move less and eat more. The struggle to find the right type of nutrition and exercise gets tricky daily. Hence my anticipation about this book and what valuable information I might imbibe from it. Mostly, I had a good reading experience. It reads like a research paper and is comprehensive. I felt like I was in a biology and nutrition class, getting a lecture about the human body.
I liked how he explained the FITTE principle, an acronym for frequency, intensity, time, type and enjoyment in Core One: Movement. For me, enjoyment is the most important factor of all. I have since realised that if I don't enjoy a particular exercise, I will not do it regularly. So it is necessary to stay consistent by enjoying my exercise routines. I loved that the author endorsed this fact as well.
The author's writing style is rich and descriptive. In Core Two: Nutrition, for example, I was awed by his description of the intricate process of digestion and absorption of food. Sometimes one tends to take things for granted. When I eat, I do so without thinking about the complexity of processes in my body. The human body is truly both fascinating and inspiring. We owe it to ourselves to keep it healthy and fit.
However, there were some things that I didn't like about the book. Firstly, In Core Two: Nutrition, the author stressed the need to buy organic foods as much as possible, along with other nutritional tips. We all know how expensive organic food can be, and most people purchase whatever they can afford. The author should have listed foods that are healthy and cheap as well. Secondly, the book was a bit dense for me. There was a lot of information to process, and it can be confusing for a beginner to understand. It would have been easier if the author included real-life examples so people could relate better with the information. For instance, he could have used some of his clientele’s personal experiences to give weight loss tips, even if anonymous. Finally, it would have helped if there were illustrations to go with the exercises at the end of the book.
Overall, I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars. It was comprehensive and full of valuable information, but it could have had real-life examples and illustrations. It was error-free, so it was exceptionally well-edited. Even though the book was aimed at the American public, I would recommend it to readers of all ages, anywhere in the world, who want to take control of their health and wellness. I would also recommend it to dieticians, nutritionists, health coaches, trainers, and wellness coaches. It will be a useful guide for their clients.
