Review of I'm Here for the Bath
When P.E. Rolita was in his twenties, he worked as a certified nursing assistant. It was while working this job that a friend introduced him to private nursing. He decided to give it a try and very nearly called it quits after his first day. However, he was convinced to stay on and try again. He ended up doing so and having a beautiful career in the field. I’m Here For The Bath is a collection of his most memorable stories.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when going into this book. I was worried it would be depressing like the majority of the books on the end-of-life topic usually are. However, I was relieved to find out that the author had the same experiences with those books, and decided to use his expertise to write a positive and uplifting book. I enjoyed reading the recounts of his many sad/happy/hopeful experiences. I loved that he included the good, the bad, and even the bat-eating dachshund.
While reading the book, I couldn’t come up with a single negative thing to say. I loved the way the author let the audience in on his personal feelings and how his job affected him in so many different ways. It also made me appreciate the people who do this work more than I already do. I have a grandmother that needs this type of care, and I am so grateful to the people like Peter who are providing it to her. I have nothing but respect for the people who help people at the end of their lives keep their dignity.
Not only was this book incredibly well-written, but it was also exceptionally edited, as I found no errors whatsoever. So, for the many reasons listed above, I have no choice but to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars happily.
I would recommend this book to readers who may be going through the part of their lives where they need some care. I think it would also be great for the family members of those people, as it does normalize the end-of-life conversation that should be had by everybody at some point.
