Review of Higher Connections
Higher Connections is a very interesting yet funny analysis of the effects of marijuana. When I first saw the cover of this book, I immediately thought “weed?” and once I read the blurb I knew I had to read it. The book has no real plot and is essentially the musings of a man when he is high and his reflections on himself and the world while in such a state. If you are after a book with a conventional story, you will not find it here.
Higher Connections is funny and quite thought-provoking despite the silly premise. It delves into what souls could potentially be and how they could have been made, nature vs nurture and the third eye. Although the ideas are written while the author is high, the editing (which was flawless) and research (which was properly cited) happened afterwards when he is sober so it is not a string of nonsensical notions that have no clear point to them. I was surprised at just how intelligently written it was, coupled with how funny I found it, so I gave it a 4/5 rating. I was tempted to give it a 5/5, however, it did lose me a bit at the end because I found it to be less engaging than the rest of the book, but at no point did I feel bored.
Higher Connections explores certain topics some may find too sensitive. I would not recommend reading this if the following may offend you:
Open discussions about whether religion is accurate as well as why/how it was created that doesn’t follow any bible.
If a discussion about abortion is something you may find offensive.
Any talk about reproduction would offend you. There is no explicit sexual content, but genitals are named and mused about.
Very mild use of profanity and not in an aggressive/hostile manner.
Additionally, if the premise that someone is high deters you because you have never been high, I can assure you that the book is enjoyable regardless. It also removes a lot of stigma and uncertainty about the experience. Overall, it is a great book and I would read it again.
