Review of 2442 Steps to Crazy - the Beginning
2442 Steps to Crazy - The Beginning by D. Paul Fleming is a true-life drama dedicated to people suffering from physical and mental abuse. It tells the story of a young boy who once experienced love from his mother while growing up, but things turned around for him, his brother, and his mother when they had a stepfather named "Crazy." The brutality he encountered with Crazy led him to seek solace in the spiritual world. Crazy never wanted him and his brother to experience a good life, ensuring he blocked anything that brought the boy happiness and fulfillment. However, his life turned when he encountered a football coach who taught him never to lose, give in, or quit. This book reveals how this encounter helped him face his fears and overcome Crazy.
The beautiful quote by D. Paul Fleming at the beginning of the book emphasizes the importance of keeping the faith alive. What kept the boy alive was the love and encouragement he received from people outside his home. His connection with Bethany and her parents revealed that he had the potential to live a better life filled with love than the one he experienced at home. Coach Swartz, also known as Coach Perfect, profoundly impacted the lives of the students he coached. He taught them to overcome fear and face challenges with unwavering faith, as demonstrated when they faced the formidable "New London High School team," known as the Whalers.
The author effectively delivers throughout all eleven chapters of the novel, but the lengthy nature of each chapter may deter some readers who lack patience. Nevertheless, I gleaned valuable life lessons from this book, touching on topics such as parenting, friendship, and the effects of abusive relationships.
The author excelled in character development, with some characters playing short but impactful roles. It was distressing to witness Crazy's cruel attacks on the boy and his ability to get away with treating a child in such a manner. The editing was commendable, as I encountered no errors, indicating exceptional attention to detail. I rate 2442 Steps to Crazy - The Beginning five out of five stars due to how well the story was well-written.
I recommend this book to all parents and guardians of teenage children, as it sheds light on the consequences of their actions towards minors. However, I caution against recommending it to young readers due to the profanity used throughout the book.
