Kayla Taylor is very obviously a good, caring mother. When her daughter, Hannah, comes home from school one day and admits she’s being bullied, Kayla goes on a surprisingly difficult journey to help her daughter in any way she can. She is absolutely determined to find a way to protect her baby.

Somewhere Kayla was not expecting to find answers was in Glennon Doyle’s book, Love Warrior. In this book, Doyle explains the history of canaries. They were used to detect high toxins in mines to save miners from entering and inhaling them. She explains that some people are canaries. They are more sensitive to dangers than others. Kayla realizes that Hannah is a canary and that she will need some extra help to grow. Canaries Among Us: A Mother’s Quest to Honour her Child’s Individuality In A Culture Determined to Negate It is a beautiful book about how Kayla’s life changed after realizing she has a canary of her own.

I absolutely adored this book. Kayla is a great writer and at times I discovered myself feeling her frustration, fear, and anger. She was phenomenal in conveying her emotions. I think this is a very important book as it highlights possible future issues for not only children being bullied but those doing the bullying as well. It emphasizes the importance of teaching children kindness and covers a myriad of different issues.

The content of this book was not only very well-written but also very important and impactful. It was effortless to follow and understand, and surprisingly educational. If I had one complaint, it would be that I found the providing of statistics to feel slightly impersonal. However, I understand they were necessary, so I will not be deducting from my score for that reason. It was effortless to follow and understand, and surprisingly educational. I appreciated the way Kayla was able to so clearly explain her emotions. For the various reasons mentioned above, I happily rate this book 5 out of 5 stars.

I would enthusiastically recommend this to parents who have canaries of their own and are feeling slightly alone. I believe they would be comforted greatly by knowing there is at least one person out there that understands their feelings. I actually think it would be beneficial for all parents, in general, to read as it could provide great support for those with children being bullied. It is only appropriate for mature readers as it contains a fair amount of profanity, as well as some very strong and difficult themes.
