Humanity Works Better explored the concepts of teamwork, productivity, and efficiency, which have all become complex and problematic concepts in the workplace. Over the years, employers have been concerned with simply turning over profit by using their existing workforce to increase productivity. However, the years have changed employees' attitudes toward work. These attitudes became more prominent after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Workers don't care, and the workforce has mainly become understaffed. Debbie Cohen and Kate Roeske-Zummer in Humanity Works Better present new ways through which efficiency and productivity can be increased and maintained at the workplace. Their five practices are fashioned towards one goal — treating employees as human beings and not just as resources. This book is an exploration of how this can be achieved.
Humanity Works Better contained a wealth of helpful knowledge with a timely message and instruction for employers of labor about modern-day strategies to build an effective, efficient, and productive workforce. The book emphasized the humanity of the workforce. There was a lot of psychological depth in the authors' writings. They made observations about human behavioral tendencies and mindset with the four growth mindsets they proffered, like 'moving from the problem-reacting to outcome-creating mindsets.' These showed that the authors deeply understood the human mind and behavior and considered them as they analyzed workplace interactions.
The authors' employed the use of stories from their clientele and even made up scenarios to put across their message. The stories were used to create teachable scenarios; they were piercing with their honesty and aptness. The 'imagine this' segment of the book was replete with vivid stories that intensely captured the authors' messages. My favorite from the section was the symbolic stories. They captured such explicit imagery of how life could sometimes be and carried so much motivation and encouragement for readers. The stories became a precise tool for communicating the ideologies espoused in this book in a more impactful and relatable manner.
One thing I loved about this book was that, if read between the lines, it would become clear that the focus was not just on the employers of labor or the organizations but on the individual employees. The authors showed employees the power they had to create positive outcomes and how to utilize that power. The responsibility to humanize the workforce was not left only to employers but to everyone.
Humanity Works Better was educational, informative, and instructive. The authors provided practical guidelines to direct readers on applying each practice to get an effective outcome. The book was easy to read. After the initial introduction, where the authors laid the background goal of the book, it was easy to follow because the stories and research results introduced were tailored to achieve that goal.
The book was well-edited and could be a fantastic resource for organizations and employees. I loved every part of this book. I was encouraged by the success stories, learned from the unsuccessful ones, and learned how my values work together in building beneficial connections and success at the workplace.
This book would be best suited for employers of labor and employees, especially those struggling to navigate a toxic work environment. Considering that the writing was perfect, I'd rate Humanity Works Better five out of five stars.
