A Stroke Survivor’s Tale: A Survivor and Caregiver’s Resource is a book intentionally written by Liam Bernard. It was divided into nineteen chapters starting with an introduction and ending with an epilogue. The tale was carefully written in one hundred and nine pages. The book is centered majorly on navigating post-stroke recovery with the life experience of the author.

Liam tells the tale of a survivor chronologically. He started with the possible symptoms and the need to share the knowledge with family, friends, and colleagues. It was thanks to the knowledge of his wife that he was rushed to the hospital immediately. He wrote extensively on post-stroke recovery, highlighting possible things that might happen to a survivor and how he could navigate through them. He used his experience to write down tips and what to watch out for in the healing process. The whole process of what he experienced, the activities he engaged in, assorted issues, and tips for caregivers were elaborately detailed in this book.

The intention behind the writing of this book is very commendable. It goes to show that in your little way, you can add value to humanity. It’s a short book but very encompassing of details needed to be read and understood by a survivor or caregiver. I liked the fact that a caveat was included to tell the audience that this was his story and the activities he involved himself in. There is a high likelihood that the activities will not be suitable for everyone, and there is a need to consult your therapist before embarking on them. I enjoyed the author’s sarcasm throughout the book. He has a good sense of humor, and I believe it will bring smiles to every reader's face.

The book was written in an unprofessional manner, and this is my firm belief of how books of this nature are to be written. The survivor is already in a dark mood and in a healing process. He needs all the encouragement, and this book will be more than a companion and a motivation to him. My best part of the book is the chapter titled ‘Reject the Nocebo.’ I felt teary while reading because it is something I have experienced happen to a close relative, but she overcame it and has improved so much and is currently living well. I enjoyed the tips given to caregivers at the end of each chapter because their role contributes substantially to the recovery of a survivor. I must commend the author for, despite providing a caveat, still going further to provide reference materials for further reading. This was very remarkable of him.

There is no part of the book that I disliked. Every chapter conveyed the appropriate message in clear and simple sentences.

I will rate the book 5 out of 5 stars. My reason is that it is more than just a book. It is motivational and can serve as a companion for a survivor. It is filled with all the information a survivor and a caregiver need to know.

I will gladly recommend this book to all stroke survivors and all caregivers, both intending and working ones. It can also be read by family members of a stroke survivor to equip them with the relevant knowledge in catering to the survivor.
