Review of Moyorcycles For Women Only
Motorcycles For Women Only by Jude Brady Smallwood is a guide for women who ride motorcycles, whether for commercial or transportation purposes. Jude had gotten introduced to the world of biking through poverty. Glenn, her former husband, was in college, and she was a waitress trying to make ends meet. She had no means of transportation, so she was often hitching rides with others. After Glenn got an idea, they saved up $100 to get a 1956 Zündapp bike. This was the genesis. They rode it till they got a Hornet, which went on until after their separation and divorce.
Jude tried to forget her love for motorcycles, but she did not go far enough and succumbed to getting another one for herself solely. In this book, she talked about riding a motorcycle from a woman rider's perspective. She dished a lot of valuable information ranging from safety precautions to correct clothing to making repairs on the motorcycle by one's self and a lot more. She also explained how to handle males with ego in the male-dominated world of motorcycles. She included a lot of record-breaking women motorcycle riders.
I love the inclusion of pictures in this book. It contained pictures of female riders on their bikes or while riding. It made the book more practical and realistic than just theory. I also loved the use of illustrations while explaining certain parts of the motorcycle. The summary of chapters given at the beginning of the book will aid the reader's understanding as they read through the book. The glossary added at the end of the book helped a lot in explaining certain unfamiliar motorcycle-related terms, for starters.
Although the author did a good job in breaking down the explanations as she wrote, some of them were still vague and will barely be understood by a novice. The glossary helped, but someone who had no previous knowledge or foundation in riding a bike may need more explanation. This is not denying the fact that this book is important for women bikers.
I will give this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I didn't remove a star despite the slight complaint in the previous paragraph because the book is still a good read and will go a long way to help women who are already in the biking world or those who are interested in it. I found one error in the book, but I still think it was professionally edited.
I will recommend this book to female motorcycle lovers and women bikers. There are a lot of words of encouragement and valuable information hidden in the pages of this book. Motorcycles For Women Only is a gem to have. Other people interested in cycling should also check it out as it contains a lot of information regarding bikes like repairs and all.
