The Healthcare system has become more complicated nowadays, not only in the US but all over the world. A lot of frustrations are faced by both patients and the medics in the field. Such range from the cost of treatment to the legal frameworks associated with healthcare.

As she concludes the last chapter of her book, Barbara is diagnosed with rare skin cancer. Her experience motivated her all the more in seeking to help others so that they could feel empowered, and have great health care experiences. Her writing is influenced by her childhood since she was born in a family with three generations of family practice physicians. Barbara watched patients waiting for her father in her family’s front foyer from the time she was young and hence sees hers as a natural, and genetic calling. One needs not to spend much to have the right treatment, the author gives nuggets on how to navigate through the health systems without spending a fortune for quality service. Some other issues that are addressed in the book include; hospital admissions, financial factors, and also care, and protection of the elderly in the ‘business’ of healthcare.

What I liked most in the book is the way she expounds on different types of insurance, the importance of being insured, and also on having an emergency plan. Her knowledge is broad on the health subject which makes the book such a gem! Indeed ‘knowledge is power’ as she indicates. It was easy to relate to much of the information such as how different hospital services and pharmaceuticals are charged differently (sometimes doubly priced depending on where one is.) Having many different topics made the scope of the book wider, and therefore rich with information useful for patients, nurses, doctors, and the executive directors of the medical facilities.

Although the author labors to explain most of the medical terms mentioned in the book (which makes it informative,) I found a few that were not well explicated. The book had a perfect format. It was also professionally edited, having no spelling mistakes or even grammatical errors. I therefore would like to gladly rate the book Surviving the “Business” of Healthcare by Barbara Galutia Regis, M.S, PA-C, 4 out of 4 stars.

Anyone concerned about their spending when it comes to treatments can highly benefit from reading this book. I would also like to recommend it to most health professionals who would like to establish long-lasting relationships with their patients.
