Review of Next Mission: U.S. Defense Attache to France
Colonel Rick Steinke was assigned as a United States military attaché to France during one of the most unstable and turbulent times in the history of France’s political and military relations with the United States. He was soon made United States' defense attaché to France and was faced with all the attendant benefits and challenges his new position posed to his professional and family life. Within his four years of service as the United States' defense attaché to France, Colonel Rick Steinke would work towards the restoration of the United States-France military relations together with his DAO teammates at the embassy. He would also be tasked with several responsibilities, such as planning major events for United States veterans and heads of state, among others. Will Colonel Rick Steinke succeed with all these responsibilities, or will the attendant challenges weigh him down?
There were a couple of things I loved about Next Mission: U.S. Defense Attaché to France. I loved that the book was enlightening on U.S. foreign policy and high-level diplomacy to a satisfying degree. I admired Colonel Ralph R. "Rick" Steinke's ability to balance his sense of duty and patriotism while respecting both nations in this work. I especially loved how the book was written in a way that readers could see themselves in some characters. I loved that the book illustrated the reward for patriotism, selflessness, and kindness. I admired the author's candor in sharing his personal experiences serving in such a capacity as he did. Finally, I must voice my appreciation for how much the book educated the reader on significant parts of history. It was indeed a very insightful read. I liked how the author stressed certain traits of some characters in the book worthy of emulation. Colonel Rick Steinke's Patriotism was one of those traits.
One thing I wasn’t quite fond of in the book was the technicality with which it was written; some terms and sentences were difficult to understand. Someone who is not familiar with military and political terms will find it challenging to retain interest or comprehension while reading some parts of this book.
I loved this book for so many reasons, most of which I already listed in the second paragraph, but owing to its technicality and the fact that I found a lot of errors in it, I would rate it three out of four stars. I restrained myself from deducting more stars because it was an enlightening read, and it highlighted remarkable character traits like patriotism and selflessness. I wouldn't say the book was professionally edited; it definitely needs another round of thorough editing.
I recommend Next Mission: U.S. Defense Attaché to France to military officers all around the world. I believe they will find it very motivating. I also recommend it to history and international relations lovers and anyone looking to learn the benefits of being patriotic.
