Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Have you ever wondered why some people get addicted to drugs or alcohol and others don’t? Have you ever thought about why some find it easy to stop using drugs or drinking alcohol while others can’t? Well, the medical book, Why Can’t Johnny Just Quit by Kyle Oh is your go-to book for all the right answers. It will change your perspective forever.
Kyle Oh, M.D. has been in private practice for over 25 years, specialising in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. His approach to addiction is very different from the norm as he tackles the problem from the root cause. He believes in educating people about understanding how and why addiction happens in the first place to avoid a lifelong battle with the disease. In this book, he breaks down age-old barriers about the misconceptions of addiction and abuse and proffers solutions to winning the war against addiction to substances.
I was excited that I could review this book because I’ve been looking for answers regarding addiction and abuse of substances. I have to say it’s an eye-opener and very informative. The author’s writing style is clear and straightforward. He states that his reasons for writing this book are threefold: to redefine addiction, to help those who are addicted to getting it under control, and finally, to understand and prevent it from happening in the first place. He also lists the categories of drugs and why it affects some people and not others.
One fact that stood out for me is how he clearly explained the difference between abuse and addiction. I’ve always thought they are the same, and the terms can be used interchangeably. He stated, for example, that all those who are addicted to alcohol are abusing it, but not everyone who abuses alcohol will get addicted. The same goes for drugs. This was a powerful revelation for me as I’ve always thought differently. He also explained how addiction only happens when a substance makes one high, not groggy, as otherwise portrayed by movies and television. These and many other proven facts and revelations made this book very interesting and informative for me.
I also liked how he backed up his facts with case studies of real people and their battles with addiction. Each case study is different, even though their addiction stories are seemingly similar. In all cases, the will to survive has to be the patient’s and the patient’s alone. The doctor can only help to a certain degree; the patient has to develop a strong will to overcome the addiction. There are also definitions at the end of the book that explains the medical terms and words used. This is useful for those not familiar with medical terms and saves us the trouble of having to look them up online.
There's nothing I disliked about this book. Overall, it is very informative, and it deserves a 4 out of 4 stars rating. There‘s no doubt that extensive research went into this, and it paid off handsomely. Two errors were spotted, but they didn’t affect my reading experience. I would say it is professionally edited. I would recommend it to anyone interested in knowing how addiction works, especially if it runs in the family. I would also recommend it to teenagers and young adults because prevention is the best medicine, after all.
