Review of Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?
Addiction has been defined as an inability to stop using a substance or engaging in a behavior, even though it is causing psychological and bodily harm. Whenever we see someone who we suppose is an addict, we never stop to wonder what really caused them to become an addict. Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?: A Common Sense Guide to Understanding Addiction by Kyle Oh aims to give insight into addiction and abuse of drugs and alcohol. This is an enlightening book explaining the differences between abuse and addiction. The author also goes in depth as to how addiction can be prevented. Have you ever wondered why your friend or relative is addicted? Have you ever asked them how the drug made them feel? This book gives an insight into addiction diagnosing and prevention.
There was a lot of useful information in this book. I have never read a book that looks at addiction from this viewpoint. Kyle Oh states that the real question we should be asking our addicted loved ones is how the drug makes them feel. This will shed light on if they are addicted or not. He states that an addicted person experiences a strong euphoric feeling from using the drug, while a non-addict will just feel groggy. This new information that the author presented is worth looking into. He also states that the individuals who get the euphoric feelings are the ones who will show withdrawal symptoms. The ones who are not really addicted can stop suddenly without any repercussions.
Why Can't Johnny Just Quit?: A Common Sense Guide to Understanding Addiction is a medical book without all the medical terms that are hard to understand. I liked how simple and engaging the writing style was. There was nothing I disliked about the book. Kyle Oh seems to care so much about his patients and their well-being. His theory on how we can prevent addiction is quite profound. The case studies were also very interesting to read.
This book was exceptionally well-edited, as I did not notice a single error while reading. It no doubt deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. There are three main questions the author suggests you ask yourself to know if you are becoming addicted to a drug. Does a low dosage of the drug stimulate you? Does the drug cause insomnia? Does the drug make you feel really good? Answering these questions might be able to help you determine what steps to take against addiction.
I would highly recommend this book to teens and parents. If you think you are susceptible to drug abuse, misuse or addiction, this is a book you need to read. Also, medical researchers might find the content of this book useful.
