As an advocate of keeping fit and healthy, I have always been fascinated and sometimes confused by different weight loss products and supplements and their effects on the body. So when I saw an opportunity to review Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice by Morton E. Tavel, MD, I immediately grabbed the chance.

The author, now retired, was a specialist in cardiovascular diseases and internal medicine for many years. He was a clinical professor at the Indiana School of Medicine and consulting professor at Care Group Inc. He has also released over 120 publications, editorials and book reviews and served on editorial boards of several national medical journals. Suffice it to say that he knows his onions about internal medicine.

In today’s world, there is a lot of misinformation about health and nutrition. Health Tips, Myths, and Tricks: A Physician’s Advice has cut through all the jargon to help readers make informed decisions about these topics and much more. The book has three parts: health tips, myths and tricks. The three sections are further explored based on verifiable evidence. It is a must-read for everyone because it covers a wide range of hitherto confusing topics. For example, I’ve always assumed brown rice is healthier than its white version. It was shocking to find out that it contains more arsenic than white rice. Meanwhile, the health industry has touted brown rice as healthier than the white version for decades.

I also like the no-nonsense straight talk of the author. He is not afraid to call out people who have misled the public with wrong information. Nobody is spared from his stinging criticisms, and it is refreshing to note that someone has the public’s best interest at heart. Dietary supplements, for instance, should be taken with a pinch of salt, according to the author. People assume that herbal supplements are safe because of their so-called natural ingredients. However, the author argued that most of these supplements have not undergone tests to ensure their safe use, and it might account for the sudden onset of medical issues in people. Even the US Food and Drug Administration agency was not left out. The author claimed that they are short-staffed and under-funded. This makes them incapable of protecting consumer health and safety in some cases.

My only issue with the book is that most of the research and evidence provided is based on the United States of America. I guess this is understandable as the author is a citizen and worked there until retirement.

However, that would not stop me from rating this book 4 out of 4 stars. It’s exceedingly useful in sieving the wheat from the chaff. I’ve learned so much from this book that I am using it as a referral for my nutrition, health and fitness goals henceforth. I could only spot two errors, so I must say it is professionally edited. It is suitable for everyone, young and old. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to make better and more informed choices about their health, fitness and nutrition.
