How to Avoid Being a Victim of the American Healthcare System: A Patient's Handbook for Survival by Dr. David Wilcox is a book every American should read. The author filled this book with valuable information to assist the reader in getting involved in their healthcare. Inside these pages, the reader will learn why it is essential to be involved, what choices they have in their healthcare, why they should ask questions, and research doctors and hospitals to make wise choices. It is the patient's right to choose. Have you asked yourself what has happened to our healthcare system in the past few years? Dr. Wilcox gives honest answers to that question and more.

The book has three parts highlighting hospital care, why medications cost so much and what the consumer pays, and developing a better healthcare system. You will learn what role pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, and the federal government play in your healthcare. The author describes the current 'pay-for-fee' system where doctors and hospitals get paid for the number of patients they see versus a new healthcare system where they get paid based on patients' quality outcomes. Other important topics discussed in the book are the future of telehealth after the pandemic, the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare, and the concept of a 'hospital at home' system. This book has so much valuable information that it is difficult to condense it into a summary. As a retired nurse myself, I encourage reading this book.

One of many shocking facts I learned while reading this book is medicine errors are the number three cause of death in the United States. The author stresses the importance of knowing your medications and being proactive with the healthcare team in making sure they have them correct. He puts great emphasis on the patient getting involved. Be your healthcare advocate or designate someone to be with you at every doctor's visit and in the hospital. Ask questions and if you still don't understand, ask more questions.

What I liked most is the boldness of the author to share information the healthcare industry does not want the consumer to know. I appreciate the transparency. It is clear Dr. Wilcox cares about the patient. Most of the healthcare is more about money than the individual. I also loved the author's stories about his uncles and their healthcare issues. Personalizing information in the book makes the reader want to get involved in their healthcare before a negative outcome occurs.

There wasn't anything I disliked about this book. It is well-written and professionally edited, making it an exciting read with understandable information. The medication information became a little burdensome, but not enough to lose interest in the author's explanations. After reading this book, the reader will walk away with a plethora of vital information to help keep themselves safe in a healthcare environment.

Because of the detailed information, excellent suggestions on how to take part in your healthcare, the author's knowledge of the issues addressed, and the superb editing with only one error, this book deserves a firm 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend this book to adults eighteen and older who feel discouraged with their current healthcare. You will want to refer to this guide repeatedly as you get more involved in your healthcare. I also recommend it to those considering entering the healthcare profession. Those under the age of eighteen may not be interested in reading a serious book about this topic.
