Review of If Your Water Cooler Could Talk
If Your Water Cooler Could Talk is an enlightening book on how to look at your employees mindsets and how to increase employee engagement by changing your organization's questions of what can we do better for the employee to what can the employee do for us. In his book " If Your Water Cooler Could Talk ", Jim Bohn summarizes in six steps how to look at how your employees are viewing your company now, and how to reroute a company's mindset from a me to a us standpoint. Dr. Bohn points out how the average employee will save their time and skills for opportunities where they can make measurable differences in the company and show off their skills as an individual, rather than as a whole. Dr. Bohn also explains how employees who believe not only in their leaders, but also their supervisors, will put more effort in their work.
This author shows the reader that the views and mindsets of the employees affect how the company runs and in which direction the organization will go. Dr. Bohn has written a book that is easily read and easily put into action by leaders in their own environments. This book clearly provides you with guidelines to follow in order to find the right questions to ask. Instead of asking how the company can improve its staff, the company should start asking how the employees can improve the organization and what can be done as a whole to promote success. This book was also very nicely edited, and I did not find a single grammar error in it. The editor also has provided all sources used in the book at the bottom of the pages where they are easy to find.
Although Dr. Bohn wrote this book as a simple-to-read instruction manual, there are still gaps in it that have left me with a few unanswered questions. He has not given many precise questions that should be asked. Specifically, Dr. Bohn made suggestions to start the necessary conversations, but did not give many instructions on how to continue the conversation, to keep employees engaged in how to improve the work environment.
This book has given me great views on how I can improve in my field of work and how to find the right questions to ask. I'd give this book a solid 4 out of 4 stars . It will easily be a book that I will keep nearby for when conversations start about how we can improve in my field of work. I will also be recommending it not only to my colleagues, but also to some of the senior management staff.
This book is crucial not only for senior management, but also for any kind of person in a leadership role. From CEOs to anyone who wants to improve the morale of employees in the workplace, this book is a wonderful guide to point you in the right direction in how to improve your organization's standings and how to get out of the mind in terms of employee engagement to organizational engagement.
