Review of God Is In the Doubt
David A. Llyod is a loving and hard-working family man. When he married his wife, Donna, she was pregnant with Alex; this boy would have been the couple’s first child. Sadly, Donna miscarried, and they never got the chance to see him grow. The couple tried building their family for many years after this, but their attempts resulted in more struggles, loss, and pain. After getting assistance with conception, the couple had a son named Caleb. Later in life, the police show up at the couple’s house to tell them Caleb had committed suicide. David started to question if God was there and if He was listening to or cared about him. God Is In The Doubt is a memoir about the author’s family-building dilemmas and his path to discovering more about God and His creation. Readers should be prepared to read about the author’s doubts, anger, and pain directed towards God.
The raw emotion David portrayed in his writing is very commendable and made this read enjoyable. Even though I cannot relate to his trials, I understood his emotional doubt throughout the book. Honestly, my faith in God was shaky at times while reading because I did not understand how or why He would allow a person to go through this much pain. When David and Donna finally figured out why childbearing was so difficult for them, readers may think the couple was relieved. To avoid spoilers, I will not say much more. I can say that couples who have had difficulty having children may relate to the author’s cry for help and consistent questioning of why this had to happen.
While sad, I enjoyed the section about friends and family leaving the couple in their time of need. This part of the book demonstrates the isolation and abandonment David and Donna felt when no one, including their church, came to help them. I have dealt with this twice already, which is why I could sympathize with their pain. Luckily, some folks helped them later on. However, this did not erase the loneliness they felt while trying to heal from their losses. I have no doubts that this section of the book will stir readers and compel them to be there for their friends and family when they need them.
This book is about the author’s shaky faith; this is why I chose to read it. Alas, this aspect was also the book’s downfall. Darwinism, creationism, the Big Bang theory, and other theories are broken down and explained. David used scientific notation to demonstrate the chances of something occurring. I cannot discredit him for having the knowledge and ability to put together complex mathematical calculations. But, for the average reader, this can be very boring and excessive. These explanations were confusing and elongated my reading time. If this section were more condensed and easily digestible, I would not have had a problem with it.
Given that the book has only six errors, I can say that it was professionally edited. God Is In The Doubt will make readers think differently, but it may be too difficult for the average reader to get through because of the advanced scientific explanations. This section of the book is why I rate this title 3 out of 4 stars. Deducing another star would not do this book justice because David was fearless while telling his readers how his faith in God was faltering. The Bible is mentioned in this book, as David is a Christian, but I do not think it will affect the reader’s enjoyability. If Bible verses and mentions of Jesus offend a reader, then they should avoid this book. Christian readers who are questioning their faith and are passionate about science will likely enjoy this book.
