Have you ever felt like all hope was lost? That all you were living for was gone and there's no longer light in your life? John Trautwein felt this way on October 15, 2010. This was the day his first-born son committed suicide. My Living Will by John Trautwein is a story of a father who tragically lost his son to suicide but found the will to live on. John Trautwein was devastated when his son, Will, took his own life. It's something no parent wants to go through. This act led John to start questioning himself. Was he unhappy? How did I not see the signs? Was I a bad parent? Why didn't he reach out to me? In his time of sadness and despair, John Trautwein created the 'Will to Live' foundation to help kids going through what his son went through. He uses this platform to raise awareness of teen suicide and what each of us can do to help.

My Living Will is a very touching and inspiring story. The emotions just spring from the page as John tells the story of his teenage son, Will. Although this is a somewhat sad story, the author has a great storytelling voice, making the book very captivating. One positive aspect of the book is that it gives hope to persons going through similar situations. The author laments on how important it is to find the will to live. He went through this unfortunate point in his life and created something helpful from it.

I couldn't find anything I disliked about the book. It was well-written and achieved the purpose for which it was written. The author seeks to make people aware of teen suicide and be willing to speak out about it. Many times, people suffer in silence because of the stigma associated with suicide and other mental illnesses. The author uses his story to get the conversation started and to help teens who are contemplating suicide.

This is truly an eye-opening book. I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I admire the writer's courage to share his experience in order to help others. The book also provides links and numbers to suicide help organizations for anyone who has these thoughts or is concerned about a loved one.

Through his talks, encouragement and support, he has influenced teens in his area to love each other, help each other and to find life teammates. This book is suitable for teens and parents alike. It is a great tool for starting the conversation about suicide with your children.
