Review of Shamanomics
Shamanomics by Giles Conway-Gordon is an economic book that takes a fresh and fascinating approach. Rather than trying to prove a point or discuss a new model, it has an unorthodox quality: much of the book is devoted to criticizing macroeconomics and various "gurus," including former FED presidents, renowned university professors, and many others. In some chapters, it discusses whether economics can be considered science.
In addition to indicating the problems and culprits, the author also mentions economists who have predicted past crises and which works can help you reach the truth. There are many quotes from economists of the present and past that serve to defend the author's views. Besides, they show how barefaced liars who were responsible for the crisis that ruined the lives of millions did not even have the decency to take their blame.
What strikes the most is how down-to-earth and beneficial the message of this book is. By not inserting mathematical content, the author made the content more accessible. Furthermore, the criticisms made of economists and macroeconomics are so devastating and realistic that the phrases sound like hammers destroying the melody sung by crooks and charlatans. Giles proves after a multitude of examples how such "economic gurus" live in a bubble dissociated from reality and how not only do they miss predictions but end up having toxic behaviors that harm the lives of millions of people. All of this is masked by a social shield that they supposedly speak in the name of "science."
Even if someone wants to be annoying, he/she will hardly find anything to complain about it. In the beginning, I found one error in the Table of Contents (the title of the second chapter is missing some words) and two errors related to the misuse of bold. Apart from that, the grammar is impeccable. Although there is no mathematical content, the author mentions a multitude of books. In the last pages, there is still a vast bibliography for those who want to go deeper. Rest assured, dear reader; there is no doubt Giles has read hundreds of books from different economic schools.
For being such a devastating, thought-provoking, and revolutionary book (in a good way), I gladly give Shamanomicsfour out of four stars. I don't remember reading such an exciting book on economics as this one, not even in college. There is not the slightest criticism to be made. I recommend this book to those interested in economics but who realize that people's quality of life has only gotten worse even with politicians faithfully following the advice of various gurus. If you want to know the cause of problems, this book is for you.
