Review of Who Told You That You Were Naked?
Who Told You That You Were Naked by William E. combs is a book that approaches the origin of sin from a more defined perspective. This book shares the story of how sin came into the world through our first parents and how that destroyed God's initial plan for mankind.
Though the story of Adam and Eve have been heard and preached so many times the author writes the incidents which he imagines might have happened in the garden which resulted in man's deviation from the purpose-driven life in which God had for man. The author stressed the fact that being naked does not really mean being unclothed but it depicts a sense of guilt and sin. This book also points to Jesus as the only way out of this whole mess. Through faith we are able to obtain salvation and this qualifies us to be called the children of God.
What I really loved best in the book was the author's approach to the topic. I would not be exaggerating if I say that I have heard the Adam and Eve story more than a hundred times in my life but the way that William E. Combs retold the story really amazed me. As I read the book, it felt like I was reading a journal or a diary wrote by Adam and Eve about their live and activities in the garden of Eden. I particularly enjoyed the way the author crafted the story, though it was not what actually happened, I have gained a new understanding of the origin of sin as well as the reason why Adam and Eve chose to eat the fruit.
Another thing loved about the book was the study questions at the end of each chapter. This happens to be my favorite part of the book as the questions were very realistic and up to standard. One question that still left me baffled was why Eve did not realize that she was naked immediately after she had eaten the fruit. The Bible has it that she tasted the fruit and saw that it was sweet before deciding to take it to her husband, it was when he had taken his own bite that they both realised that they were naked. I seriously intend to ask my pastor about it on Sunday as I have been thinking fruitlessly about it.
There was nothing I hated about this book. It was interesting and lively yet educating and inspiring. I finished this book in three hours and I still don't believe I did because it would normally take me a week to finish a Christian based book due to the fact that I found them boring but this one was different. The author's approach to the story made it difficult for me to drop this book til I had finished it.
Also this book seems to me to be professionally edited as I could not find errors either because I was too engrossed in the book or that they were so negligible. I give this book 4 stars out of 4 stars because it is lively, educational and above all well edited. I recommend it to Christians as it might not be a good pick for a non-christian reader.
