Burn survivor, abuse survivor, rejected, stigmatized, ostracized, find love only to lose love. You are not alone in these traumatic battles; the message Celia Belt shares will inspire you to emerge- Remarkably Intact.

Remarkably Intact by Celia Belt is a memoir of Belt’s challenges in life and how she manages to overcome them. Belt is a burn and abuse survivor, but despite her pain, she became a present help for other burn survivors. Being the founder of Moonlight Fund, Belt acknowledges and works tirelessly to address the needs and lack of resources thereof for burn survivors.

Within this memoir, there are nine (9) chapters, each of which begins with a poetic expression that embodies the agenda of each chapter. Additionally, the chapters venture into the sexual abuse, adjustment to numerous jobs, society’s perception of persons who are burnt, and the life and death of Belt’s loved ones.

The powerful affirmation that forgiveness is a vital aspect of the healing process resonates positively with me. This forgiveness serves to assure persons that the burden of hurt/pain becomes light when you forgive the perpetrator. Eventually, with total forgiveness, one can reach a place of peace. Peace with self, peace with the perpetrator, and an overall peace with the wider society.

Another great aspect of this memoir is the way Belt finds humour in dark times. Belt does not allow her circumstances to keep her down; she has a resilient spirit that endeavours to illuminate the dark moments of life. This is a good representation of a can-do persona.

I did not find anything that would trigger dislike and there were no errors. Therefore, the editing quality was exceptionally done so I rate this read as 4 out of 4 stars.

I recommend this book to burn and/ or abuse survivors and those working on the burn unit. Persons who have relatives and friends enduring such trauma would also find this an invaluable one.

Lastly, persons who are highly pessimistic when it comes to obstacles in life would not enjoy this read because every page, every chapter is one of inspiration on how to turn one’s trial into triumph.
