Overcoming Adversity by Nelson J. Fowlkes is about overcoming hardships, namely due to discrimination, but also obstacles that anyone could encounter in day-to-day life. This story was like an autobiography where Nelson shared details about his life and how he overcame challenges during his service in the military, while pursuing higher education, finding housing in segregated neighborhoods, and being unwelcomed in board rooms despite having the experience and qualifications to be in a leadership role.

The most positive aspects of this book are life lessons from Nelson. Many of the challenges he shared were relatable, with the exception that his story took place during a time when he was clearly and unfairly turned away from opportunities due to his skin color. He revealed his skills in finding opportunities, staying positive, and regularly reminded us that we should keep our eyes on God and have faith that everything will turn out alright. He shares what steps he took whenever he had to deal with setbacks in his life and what his thought process was behind every action he took to reach his goals.

There are no negative aspects or criticisms for this book. If I were to make one suggestion—again, it is not a negative criticism—it would be to place a timeline at the beginning or toward the beginning of the book. A military service timetable was included, but an overall life event timeline would have been interesting and very helpful so I could refer to it throughout the book while I was reading about various life events and obstacles.

I rate this book a 4 out of 4. The encouragement I received from this book was desperately needed during a difficult time of my life. The story itself was easy to read and was broken up in chapters to summarize specific topics and aspects of Nelson’s life and career. It was also easy to follow along Nelson’s family as they experienced familial growth, discrimination obstacles, and geographical moves.

This is a must-read story for adults who are feeling discouraged and overwhelmed with their personal and career challenges. Nelson’s story showed that he had to deal with many setbacks that were outside of his control, yet he always found a way to move forward. Use this book for encouragement and as a guide on how to face your own hardships and difficulties that are outside of your control. I’ll be thinking of Nelson and his example to look out for opportunities, keep faith, and continue moving toward a better life.
