Review of Chronicles Journey Toward Hope

[Following is a volunteer review of "Chronicles Journey Toward Hope" by Marvin Wilmes.]
We have all experienced loss, but we struggle to process loss because we lack the language and tools to articulate the feelings and emotions evoked by loss. This book gives us language and vocabulary that we can use to reflect on our own losses, thus helping us to articulate our own experiences with loss. Marvin Wilmes’ second book, delves deeper into the subject of loss, providing a broader and refreshing view of personal experiences with loss. In the book, Chronicles Journey Toward Hope: Fifteen Keys to Overcoming Loss through Faith, Perseverance, and Surrender, Marvin Wilmes, uses examples from his real-life experiences to give us insight into a person’s journey processing and overcoming a series of losses. His conceptualization of loss encompasses; loss of loved ones, loss of property, unrequited love, loss of a job, income, loss experienced when one has to let go of a dream and when life is far from ideal. From these losses, the author draws and shares 15 practical keys to overcoming loss. Marvin Wilmes’ account of his life’s events reveal that loss changes our lives. He teaches us that overcoming loss requires accepting and adapting to these changes in one way or the other.
I like the book’s organization. The book chapters are short and have a flow. The book transcends across genres serving as both a memoir and self-help book because of the 15 keys. The use of powerful quotes, bible verses and a series of stories from the authors’ life to support each key helped me to link everything in each chapter to a central concept, making the book a great tool for self-reflection. I also found it interesting that, despite the fact that the author and I come from different generations, background and culture I was able to relate to the authors’ life events and able to learn from their crucible moments. For instance, I could relate to his struggles with co-dependency, struggles with finding love, navigating changes in family structure, going through career transitions and searching for his purpose. I was also able to relate to the authors’ dependence on both counselling and spirituality to deal with life’s challenges. Finally, I like that the author gave an authentic account of his life’s story, without sounding like a sage. Throughout the book, we see him trying to figure things out as he goes.
I do not have many negative things to say about the book, except that it was hard to keep up with all the characters in the book, but that did not affect the main message. I wish some keys on overcoming loss such as key 4 and 5, were more succinct. These were rather ambiguous to me. I read the whole chapter before grasping the take home message.
I rate this book 4 out 4 stars. It well written and edited. I plan to read it again because it is full of valuable life lessons, presented in a simplistic way therefore easier to grasp. After all the author has gone through in life, I think he has done a great job writing a compelling narrative without being pessimistic and without the overuse of the redemptive narrative.
I would recommend this book to Christians dealing with losses and those grappling with God’s plan and direction for their lives. It is an important book for building faith and resilience. However, despite its’ spiritual take on life’s events, I think anyone who believes that there is bigger meaning to life, or enjoys learning from other people’s crucible moments will enjoy reading this book. I think the book serves as a dose of reality in this current era of social media, where a quick scroll on our feed is enough to convince us that we are the only ones dealing with losses and challenges. If you are one of those people, I believe you will benefit from reading this book and will draw inspiration from the author’s tenacity to remain hopeful through life’s challenges.
