Review of My Living Will
My Living Will by John Trautwein is a story about the author’s life that is both heart-wrenching and heartwarming at the same time. The book bleeds love and hopes with every word. It is not only a story about a man’s personal life; it is a motivation for teenagers and parents to have hope in life and the people around them. The author tries to deliver a message that no matter how hard life hits you, even the worst thing can be turned around to make not only your own life but other's life beautiful too.
In the mid of October 2010, the author woke up one day feeling how fulfilling and satisfactory his life was. He had a perfect wife and four perfectly healthy children. But God had a different plan as he ran upstairs after hearing the screams of his wife and found his eldest son, Will, dead in his room. The author’s life took a whole new turn when his firstborn committed suicide. Going through such an incident is one of the worst things a parent can go through. The author and his family were devastated, but they had their loved one’s around them to help them change their lives. So, the author gathered the courage to do something for his son that did not only gave satisfaction to his family but was also going to save other lives. The author, with the help of his friends and neighbors, gathered courage and started the “Will to Live Foundation” to create awareness about teen suicide among both teenagers and adults.
The author has described in the finest detail everything about his son, Will. Especially the time when he came into this world. From the author’s writing, I can understand how proud and happy he was to become a father. When his son died, he blamed himself for not being a good father. But he turned around his life by putting his faith in hope. What he has said through his words is that every tragedy, no matter how painful, can be turned into triumph with some hope and love.
The best thing about the book is how beautifully it is written. I was sucked right into the story. I love how the author has boldly penned down everything that happened to him and his family. It is very hard to imagine how courageous it was for the author to write everything down in such fine detail. Opening up to the world with such vulnerability is worth every credit. And honestly, there is nothing in the book I dislike. Turning a tragedy like death into something so beautiful is what the author has done in his life.
The book is perfectly edited, as I could not spot any noticeable typos or errors. Moreover, there is no sexual content in the book.
On the whole, I will rate this book a 4 out of 4 stars read. It is a thought-provoking read as it delivers a message that it is important not to blame ourselves for an inevitable loss. The book spreads awareness and creates hope. Moreover, it is an honest account of a man's life. Hence, the perfect rating.
I recommend this book to a mature audience. Readers with a sensitive heart or who cannot handle reading something on suicides must not read this book. People who have been through a tragedy and are looking for motivation to do something must go for it. Lastly, the book has some religious content, so I would suggest the readers pick it accordingly.
