As a Christian, have you ever harboured any reservations about your beliefs? Ever wondered about the discrepancies in the Old and New Testament? Well, Wilderness Cry by Hilary L Hunt M.D, might just be the book to answer your questions. It is the controversial page-turner that will blow everything you have ever known about the Bible and Jesus Christ, out of the water. It dares you to think about Christianity in a way that you have never done before.

The author was born in the deep Bible belt of West Kentucky and raised as a Roman Catholic. As a child, he was taught never to question anything. Everything that ever happened to him, was ordained as the Will of God. He however realised at the age of 11 that his prayers were meaningless as they never got answered. That was the beginning of his journey to find answers about God and the Bible.

Wilderness Cry is raw and factual. The author lays it bare, painstakingly dissecting each topic, piece by piece. He explains what God and the Trinity mean to him as an individual. He expounds on the notion of free will and how it has been misconstrued over the years. He also discusses amongst other topics, the link between creation and evolution, the concept of sin and prayer, who Jesus Christ really was, and the future of Christianity.

The author did a good job in dissecting Christianity and what he believed to be the real truth about the religion. It might be useful to anyone who has been questioning their faith and is looking for answers. It could also be helpful to those interested in the scientific and philosophical perspective of God as an entity on His own, devoid of religion.

I also like the fact that his writing style is easy to understand. His points are deep and thought-provoking. He invites you to brush aside your age-old notions about organised Christianity and challenges you to think rationally about the alleged discrepancies that have been unquestioned for centuries.

However, I feel that the author’s entire journey is based on a faulty foundation. He admitted that he began questioning his faith because his prayers were unanswered, and that made him realise that prayers don’t change anything. Personally, I can say that this is very misleading as I have experienced something entirely different as a Christian. You cannot simply state that something doesn’t work just because you haven’t experienced it.

Also, there’s no conclusive evidence in some of the purported facts he wrote. Most of it is just based on assumptions and hearsay. For example, there’s simply no way of knowing what happened during the Last Supper with Jesus and his disciples or if the Bible has been tampered with, either deliberately or otherwise. His topic on Eternity is another prime example. He just explained it based on his own theories. There's no Bible quote or any other citation whatsoever. It seems to me that most of the author's arguments are just subjective conclusions.

Overall, I’ll give the book a rating of 3 out of 4 stars. It is a good read, but the author's arguments didn't convince me. It also has a few typos, so I can say it wasn’t exceptionally well-edited. It has no profanity or erotic scenes, but it wouldn’t be suitable for some sects of Christianity due to its controversial viewpoints. It would be suitable for those who have questions about their Christian faith and are extremely willing to keep an open mind.
