The Blessings in Every Lesson: A reflective guide on the road to self-love and spiritual riches by Jessica Greer is an encouraging self-help book based on the author’s life. Jessica was an emotionally damaged woman who was highly dependent on medications and prone to depression and mental breakdowns. Her four children are of different fathers, and all these relationships were toxic and exhausting. Her final relationship that bore her fourth child was the most taxing and the most enlightening at the same time. Jessica calls him Mr. ‘Walmart’ since that is where they met. He took the most out of her, resulting in a mental breakdown that ultimately led to her awakening.
Her psychological abuse began early; she endured constant verbal and emotional bullying from her peers. Additionally, being a middle child in a family of five siblings made her feel unloved and alone. At thirteen, she finally had enough and made her first major decision, which lasted up to her eighteenth year. At eighteen, she adopted a risky lifestyle to feel alive and wanted. At nineteen, she had her first pregnancy, which was threatened by a possible sexually transmitted infection. A lot was yet to follow, and none of Jessica’s pregnancies were conventional. Jessica’s life was a seesaw, and it took time and tremendous effort for her to be the current happy, healthy, and wealthy Jessica that wrote this book.
Jessica uses a friendly and intimate tone, such that it feels like the reader is having a one-on-one conversation with her. The description of every scene and situation is vivid and precise, enhancing the reading experience. For instance, I could visualize the first encounter with ‘Walmart’ and feel the tense and volatile relationship that ensued. The book also elicits several emotions like anger at the mistreatment, frustration at Jessica’s recurrent behavior, and happiness when she finally triumphs and breaks free from the toxic relationship. During the reading, I could not help but pause and reflect on my life and situation.
My favorite aspect of the book is its chronological arrangement. There are seven chapters, and each has various subtopics that represent the author’s stages in life or decisions based on an experience, giving it a fluid flow. Furthermore, the author includes specific dates for significant events and phases. For example, her fourth child was born on May 13, 2019, and she suffered postpartum depression. On November 4, 2019, she suffered the most severe breakdown, and on January 6, 2020, she finally reached out for help. I equally love the wordplay, like the word depression to (de)ep (press) (on). This makes the read more enjoyable and meaningful.
The book is professionally edited; I did not find any substantial errors. The language is intelligible and entirely free of any profanities. The intimate scenes are vague, making the read suitable to any reader who comprehends it. What I dislike is the succinct nature of the book. I understand it is challenging to share one’s story publicly; however, I still feel the narrations need more depth to create more impact and understanding of the experiences. The author also highlights Queen Esther’s story in the Bible and draws lessons from it. The Blessings in Every Lesson: A reflective guide on the road to self-love and spiritual riches tells a story of overcoming and taking modest but continuous steps to heal. It presents this in a fun and suspenseful story with lessons at the end. It deserves a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend the book to anyone in need of a raw and human story about mistakes, inner strength, and spirituality.
