Review of The Vision
This book was very interesting. Wilbert has an extraordinary gift, and I’m pleased that he’s willing to share it with fellow believers. I was pretty fascinated by all the supernatural encounters he’s had. These occurrences were very engaging and really held my attention. He described an incident where he’d been attacked by a skinless demon, which was really creepy. He’s spoken with his guardian angel, and he even came face to face with God. The author apparently even has a memory of his time before earth, when he was asked to choose the type of life he wished to have.
This book is not only about spiritual encounters, but is also a memoir as well. He grew up during the racially charged tensions that were present in the Deep South. His family lived a very simple country life, which was interesting to read about. They were eventually forced to flee north at one point for their own safety. I enjoyed reading his descriptions of what happened during this period because they were real, personal experiences; not political narratives. He faced prejudice, danger, and racism throughout his life, but he remained very devoted to Christ. I liked that even though he faced some very dark times, he was honest about his feelings without being bitter. He writes from a black man’s perspective, while also exuding the love and acceptance Christ teaches for others. Even though these times were hard, the author doesn’t drag his readers down with an abundance of negativity. Things happened, and God helped him through it. I found it kind of inspiring, and a unique glimpse into actual history.
The author does not consider himself a writer, but he is a good storyteller. I really enjoyed every one of his stories, visions, dreams, and encounters. The book became a bit of a page-turner for me because I wanted to know what he’d show me next. I didn’t have any trouble understanding anything he wrote, but the grammar is not perfect. Errors are frequently present, but I enjoyed the book so much I didn’t personally feel bothered by it. The most common error I saw was the misuse of “then” when he meant “than.” In order to improve the professional appearance of his writing, he might consider an editor, but I was satisfied by his disclaimer that he’s not a writer and just enjoyed the story.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Professional editing would award the book the highest score, but I really liked everything, otherwise. Skeptics will likely not find it believable; even some Christians may find his stories too fantastical, but I was thoroughly enraptured by them. If you ever wondered what goes on in the spiritual world, check out this book. It might answer some of your questions. ****** The Vision View: on Bookshelves
