Review of The daughter of a schizophrenic mother and a narcissistic father
The marriage between Margaret and Bernhard was a disaster; Margaret faced constant verbal, emotional, and physical abuse from her husband, as she tried in vain to please him. She had two children in quick succession, Susanne and her brother, which angered Bernhard as he squarely blamed her for not being careful enough. Susanne and her brother depended upon each other for comfort and security. At age eight, sadly, her father began sexually molesting her, and when she reached fourteen, he finally raped her. His abuse escalated as her age advanced to a point where he took her to audition for a role in an adult film production company. Soon, Susanne started planning her escape, going to heartbreaking lengths to find solutions and escape Bernhard’s torture. Through it all, she still meets people who assist her and reinstate her faith in humanity. She finally manages to attain some degree of freedom and hope for a new journey to recovery.
The book intricately describes the various scenes, settings, and every heart-wrenching detail in the story. The author dedicates the first two chapters to describing and understanding her parents’ origin and nature. The book also includes facts on the various aspects that characterize the two conditions, with credible references. The subsequent chapters then chronologically detail Susanne’s life from age four to twenty-two, with exquisite and vivid descriptions that enable visualization. Additionally, the book evokes a range of emotions, mostly anger, sadness, and empathy, making the reader connect with the author’s troubled life.
My favorite and most amazing aspect of the book is how the author manages to weave in humor and sarcasm in the read. Amidst the seriousness and profoundness of the read, one still gets to laugh and experience light moments, making the read uniquely enjoyable and intriguing. There is nothing to dislike about the read; it is a captivating piece of writing, with crisp and legible fonts. Additionally, the author advocates for tolerance and acceptance within the read, calls out domestic violence, and addresses the importance of overcoming self-hate.
The book is professionally edited; I found a few and minor grammatical and spelling errors. The language employed is intelligible but with several instances of profanities. The cruel and sexual abuses highlighted in the story makes the book suitable for mature and less sensitive readers. The Daughter of a Schizophrenic Mother and a Narcissistic Father is a bold and empowering account of the plight and mindset of those suffering various forms of abuse. It is a story of resilience and a constant fight for freedom. It has a perfect ending that not only calms the heart but also leaves it in anticipation for the next book in the series. I, therefore, give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. I recommend it to those looking for an educative and highly impactful read. ****** The daughter of a schizophrenic mother and a narcissistic father View: on Bookshelves
