Review of Companionship
The topics covered by the author include dating, courtship, engagement and marriage. One of the recurring themes of the book is taking things slow when beginning a new relationship. The importance of friendship and maturity prior to courtship is emphasized. Mr. Carter also discusses more sensitive topics such as sexually transmitted diseases and sexual relationships in a direct and honest manner. He recommends this book for teenagers and directs certain parts of the book to these younger readers.
I was impressed with the advice this book provides. It covers a wide range of topics encountered in relationships. For example, living together prior to marriage is discussed. The discussion includes positive and negative aspects in an honest and mature manner that will assist readers in making decisions. What I liked most about the book is that no topic seemed to be off -limits. It takes a candid look at all aspects of a healthy relationship.
What I disliked about the book was its reliance on statistics without providing a source. For example, the author states that “99% of dating and relationships will not work out,” but doesn’t provide a source for this high percentage. Also, he states that it is his opinion that “60% of teenagers and adults in America support violence,” without providing any basis for that opinion. If the author had included the basis for his opinions or the source of his statistics, then the reader would have more confidence in the statements.
Overall, I rate this book two out of four stars. This rating is due to the large number of grammatical and typographical errors in the book. The errors were distracting at times. I would recommend this book to young adults and adults interested in pursuing a mature relationship. The direct discussions of sex and sexually transmitted diseases make this book inappropriate for young readers. Also, there is a religious aspect to the book that may not be appropriate for some readers. The Bible is quoted several times. Also, the author makes statements that people should “live the right way” and that the author respects gay people but does not “believe in that behavior”. These statements could be offensive to some readers. ****** Companionship View: on Bookshelves
