Review by Fola_M -- How To Be Successful by M. Curtis McCoy
“You learn more from failure than from success. Don't let it stop you. Failure builds character.” This quote from M. Curtis McCoy’s book, How To Be Successful: Think Like A Leader, sums it all. The author has experienced failure in the most horrible way, and he didn’t only survive but thrive. This book is about failures, successes and second chances. It also compiles the experiences of accomplished people from all walks of life.
M. Curtis McCoy had it all at 27. He owned many companies in different sectors and was living the good life at a young age. Then, it all came crashing down when he started having seizures. He was diagnosed with brain cancer and given just a few months to live. His businesses collapsed because he lost the ability to perform even simple tasks. How did he overcome this great challenge, and build his life and business all over again? Well, you need to read this book to find out.
One of the things I liked about this book is that it isn’t only about business as the title implies. It’s also an inspirational and thought-provoking book about setbacks and triumphs in everyday life. It is about fighting one’s way back from the abyss and attaining greater heights with nothing, but faith and determination. The author didn’t only use his own life as an example but also drew from the wealth of experience of other successful people from different lines of work. They range from a US Navy Seal sniper to a publisher who has served time. Their conversations are raw and real.
I also like the way the author uses a structured set of questions for each individual in getting his message across. These are simple yet profound questions that provoke philosophical and meaningful responses. My favourite question is:
‘“Are there any books you've read more than once? Why?”
This question resonates deeply with me because obviously, I like to read, but only for entertainment and relaxation. The answers to this question have taught me that successful people continuously improve themselves by mostly reading self-help, financial and motivational books. They are constantly imbibing knowledge and applying it to their personal and professional lives. It doesn’t matter how accomplished they are; continuous knowledge is lifelong.
Another aspect of this book that stands out for me is the author’s unshakable faith in God, given everything he has been through. You will find relevant bible verses throughout the sections. Most of the interviewees are Christians as well, and this shows through all of their conversations. Thus, I would say this book is more suitable for Christians. However, the author’s writing style and dialogues are so simple and easy to comprehend, that even non-Christians will find the lessons and stories easy to identify with.
Apart from conversations with entrepreneurs, other topics that will challenge your mindset are Six Keys To Building Quality Friendships, Practice Delayed Gratification, The Art of Saying, "No" etc. I particularly like the topic, Don't Take Ownership Of Misfortune, because it is extremely easy to identify with. The author implores people to take charge of their life, and not let their setbacks define them. He explains that by having an optimistic mindset, people can significantly reduce their risk of death.
My only problem with the book is the choice of font which affected my reading experience considerably. Hence, I’ll rate this 3 out of 4 stars. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the book. It is professionally well-edited, and there are no erotic scenes or profanity. I would recommend it to readers of all ages and beliefs, although it might be more suitable for Christians. However, I will say if you are struggling with life in any way, pick up this book. You might learn a lesson or two that will change your mindset and invariably, your life.
