Dr. Richard L. Hansler wrote Fight COVID-19 with Melatonin because the general population needs to know this information while the world is dealing with this pandemic. As people return to work and social interactions increase, especially in the absence of a vaccine, this is another level of possible protection we can utilize in addition to wearing a mask and social distancing.

Although Dr. Hansler is not a medical doctor, he has a Ph.D. in physics from Ohio State University. Dr. Hansler founded the Lighting Innovations Institute at John Carroll University after retiring from GE in 1996 where he worked in research for 43 years. In the late 1990s, Dr. Hansler began studying the effect of light on sleep and health. Dr. Hansler is qualified to offer his advice to the general population on this topic.

The primary objective of this book is to examine the evidence that taking melatonin daily (2 – 5 mg tablets) may reduce your risk for getting a COVID-19 infection, and if you do become infected, the illness will be less severe. A secondary objective is to explain why avoiding “blue light” for three or four hours before a regular bedtime will maximize the natural melatonin in your body.

This is a short book, only 44 pages, but there is a lot of information. Chapter 1 explains what melatonin is, the safety of melatonin, the availability of melatonin in food, and the benefits of melatonin. Chapter 2 discusses how melatonin is secreted in the brain and how it protects the brain. Chapter 3 explains how melatonin can potentially protect against COVID-19. Chapter 4 includes research from world experts related to treating COVID-19 with melatonin. Chapter 5 provides a summary of the data.

Dr. Handler states, “The only certain way to prevent a COVID-19 infection is to avoid contact with a carrier. Melatonin may give some immunity to the infection and it may reduce the severity of symptoms if you do become infected.” I found several articles in the National Library of Medicine that support the claim that melatonin is effective in combating various bacterial and viral infections. So I believe the data presented in this book is credible.

Dr. Handler suggests that to maximize the natural production of melatonin, we should reduce our exposure to “blue light” in the hours before bedtime. Basic physics tells us that sunlight contains red, orange, green, and blue light rays. Combined, the whole spectrum of colored light rays is called “white light” or sunlight. Rays on the blue end of the spectrum have shorter wavelengths and more energy. With the proliferation of energy-efficient light bulbs and electronic devices with screens, we are more exposed to “blue light.” Doctors have been advising for years to put phones and computers away before bedtime because light from the screens may cause interruption to your sleep.

The data presented in this book is based on facts and science. I didn’t find any inconsistencies or fallacies in this study. It seems consistent with the medical data available today. I agree with the author’s conclusion that the combination of increased natural melatonin and a melatonin supplement shows promise in reducing your risk for infection with COVID-19 as well as reducing the severity of COVID-19 symptoms. I can’t find any flaws or shortcomings in this book.

This book is well written and professionally edited. It is written using scientific verbiage but also contains summary-level data that anyone can understand. I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in taking additional steps to protect yourself and your family against the COVID-19 virus. I am giving this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.

Nice to have an additional safeguard in place and I know that melatonin helps me with sleep, but didn't know about it's use to combat a virus. Thanks for the well researched and informative review.
