Official Review: Salsa by Patricia Scott
Salsa by Patricia D. Scott introduces us to a young woman named Kat who wrestles with an intense desire writhing within her as she lays eyes on a handsome stranger running in a park. This desire affects both her body and mind, as she obsesses over the stranger and plans different strategies to get him to notice her. How will she get the stranger of her dreams, and what kind of sparks will fly when the two come together?
The writing started off strong. I enjoyed Kat's inner dialogue with the reader, and how she handles encounters with the handsome man we learn is named Amiechie. The chase is naturally exciting, especially in the brief moments of frustration when her plans don't play out as expected. Watching her work to capture Amiechie's heart is what I liked most about the story.
Unfortunately, I think that the quality of the story slowly deteriorated as the book continued on. For the first few chapters, Kat's inner dialogue was still fresh and enjoyable, but I had a hard time believing she had truly fallen in love with Amiechie. What she described sounded more like infatuation because of how quickly she told her best friend that she loved him. Amiechie's behavior and declarations of love also sounded more like fantasy than reality. For example, after an argument, they have makeup sex and he says "he never needs any space if [she's] not in it." This would not be a healthy way to express love in real life.
I figured at this point that it was a fantasy fulfillment book, and continued on. I took away one star because the romance was no longer fully believable, but for a while, I was still able to enjoy the fantasy for what it was.
I give the author props for writing some spicy scenes. The scenes that worked best were the ones that had some buildup to them, like the one where Kat plans to surprise Amiechie at work, or the ones where Amiechie initiated and Kat kept wondering what he was going to do next. The first sex scene was also good and very descriptive.
With that said, many scenes seemed to be out of place. The gym one was interesting but it came out of nowhere. I would expect some degree of random sex in any erotic book, but I think the unexpected scenes were overdone here and took away from the story. Sometimes I would come across two or three in a row, and this happened so many times it greatly lessened the impact of these scenes.
I also got tired of the way that the conflicts between Kat and Amiechie seemed to solve themselves. Just when Kat calms down and realizes she needs to have thoughtful, problem-solving conversations with Amiechie, he shows up at her doorstep ready to make up and have sex. This destroyed any suspense the story might have otherwise had, and this is what I disliked the most.
The book was not professionally edited. I easily counted over 10 mistakes and had to take away another star for that.
Finally, the book had a very abrupt ending. I wouldn't have ended a chapter that way, let alone an entire book. I took away the third star after reading it.
Between the unrealistic behavior, numerous errors, and unsuitable ending, I had no choice but to give the novel a 1 out of 4 stars. I would have a very difficult time recommending this book to others because I struggled to finish it myself. If anyone does decide to read it, they should keep in mind that there is profanity in addition to the erotic content. I think the book can be greatly improved with more rounds of editing, thoughtful conflict resolution, and an ending that neatly wraps up the story.
